well,
considering all your feedback, I can see my question was almost leading itself to the obvious answer of DAYTONA... comparing an aged vintage with a modern, classic styled piece? For some members, its a no contest, certainly so....
I guess we could narrow down a bit...
The Daytona: very good tool watch because all the dings and scratches would only enhance its vintage beauty.
The Xplorer: a tool watch also but the finish is so nice on these new "super reps" that scratches and dings would make you cringe and eventually force you to overlook the wear and tear, if you can live with that of course!
Reliability alone, say as per movement: the Xplorer had the edge over the old a7750...overtime, the a7750 (Daytona) would test your dedication to it by waving the Service Cost flag at you....sooner that the Xplorer I guess....
Feel on the wrist: the Xplorer has way, way more heft on the wrist and at 42mm, leaves you with the feeling that you undeniably have a manly piece on that lilliput wrist of yours...
The Daytona: hardly can tell you have it on and, overall, it feels surely tinny compared to the thick Xplorer.
Usefulness: no doubt the Daytona loses many points here because its dial is very hard to read. The steel colored hands against the creamy subdials almost make the former invisible ands you often have to take second or third look to tell time. Or, depending on the lighting around you, you may have to twist your wrist at certain angles to tell time when the light eventually hot the steel hands.
I say that putting the Daytona in such an aesthetic contest as this one against any watch will preset many minds...afterall, the Daytona has an attrative, distinctive look....
