How to go about getting gen strap?

Great idea.You could always tell the store that the strap is going to be a gift. That way they will not ask to see the watch.

Here's the way that I look at that and I'm sure the AD will too. You are a customer purchasing goods from the store, so why would it matter what you are going to do with the strap after you buy it? I think as long as you do your homework and know the model number etc. you should have no problem getting a strap for your watch.
You should, and likely will, need to know the REFERENCE number of watch.
Saying IWC Big Pilot will not work. Search google and if you look hard enough possibly Ebay or a watch site such as JomasShop should list the reference number.
Once having that shouldnt be a problem!
The paperwork that comes w a gen lists reference number - and they will tell you to look at that if you dont have it already (before placing the order!!)

I went to a local AD to buy a gen Corum alligator strap and gen deployment buckle for my Corum Romulus (a gen watch too). I never bought the watch from that specific AD and didnt wear it in to show them. I just asked for the band for the specific model and they ordered. I payed half up front and half when it came in. I'm not sure if all ADs are like that, but if you are willing to spend money with them, I dont see them NOT taking it from you. I ended up going back for a gen B&R velcro strap for my rep BR02 and they just placed the order the same way.

Just walk in and ask for the size you need, they make no issue on selling these! Not like HUBLOT et al...
