I was hoping I could have this one modded rather than buy a new one. It is what I thought was a good starting point. Got it in a M2M sale. Has "Stated" Swiss ETA - still need to verify.

One thing that bugs me is the crown. It just doesnt feel very sturdy when un-screwed. Is this any better in the newer versions?

Sam,

It boils downs to how much play money you have or if you don't care do as you intend. But all the mods you speak of will get your 3.5 to a 4.1 at twice the cost. And it will still have the 3.5 stigma. You can't mod it and then expect to sell it at more than what a v5 would sell new. This is what most newcomers need to come to terms with, there will always be a fix, an update worse than windows, ios or android.

Ultimately, it is what you want to do. As bmw said, just giving you advice but it is up to you. I have a v3 and it's ok as I don't think mine was particularly bad. The tells we all know are there. But because I don't care about them as it is not a rolex, it's all good.

When they get to version 10 and it is 99.9% then I'll upgrade and use the v3 as a daily beater.

Do you have the Gen Crystal too?

The rep crystal won't fit into the gen bezel from what I've seen. The gen crystal has a stepped-edge to use double gaskets, while rep crystal only uses a single gasket.

The crystal is available.

Mainly wanted the inner rotating bezel. The guy I found with one has an entire case set for sell, but he will part it out.

BMW said the inner bezel will not fit, so it kinda kills the project. Can anyone confirm this?

If the whole caset is available, hell yeah that's the ultimate route to take then. Also don't forget to source a slow beat eta movement otherwise that's yet another tell.

So is the v3.5 dial good enough to use?

Also, he is missing the bezel screws. You think the rep hex case screws will work?

V 3.5 dial is quite nice IMO. If you're shelling for the case etc. anyway, you might try to acquire an eta "powermatic 80" movement (only available in tissot powermatic 80 watches, I believe). It's a low-beat based on the 2824, and apparently it has a ton of advantages including superior accuracy and an 80 hour power reserve. May be better than modding a 2824 with parts from a 2846 (these frankenmovements are difficult to calibrate and often run fast/slow, as I have experienced with mine). Just double check that the rep diver hands/datewheel will fit on the powermatic, it if you go that route.
