Question about 21J

Hello all. I recently purchased a Rolex YM for my wife from Marvelous. When I sent him the link to the watch I wanted he responded : We can get the YM with Asian21J movement if you like. ETA2671 movement is quite expensive., around 500$ now. No need to get that movement. :)" so I agreed.

Being new and knowing little about movements, I assumed it was an automatic movement but read that they can also be manual. Well, I've been thinking there was something wrong with the power reserve of this watch and now I'm thinking it's a manual wind (this is why I'm in the flame free zone). I've never even removed a case back yet, but can anyone tell me if this could be manual?

Here is the link to the original watch :

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey buddy, I'm in no means an expert in movements too, but i think that's an auto. The pics in the link shows it's an auto. Try shaking it from an empty power reserve, if it moves, then its an auto

I know, but the link was just used to show Marv what I wanted. In the body of my post, you'll see that Marv said he can get me the same watch with 21J movement.
I'll try to pull the back off (I need to learn how to do this eventually) and take a pic.

Thanks bro!

The 21j is a low beat automatic. It can be wound manually also, but if it doesn't charge when it's in the wrist then it isn't working properly.
It's a good starting point for a first rep IMO, as it's affordable and reliable.
Enjoy it when you get it!

I have not seen a hand wind movement in a rolex, it is automatic 99.9%, like someone said, if you can get it started simply by swirling it, it is auto, if it has poor reserve, it has issues.

Can't even get it started by swirling it - only winding. Looks like the automatic movement is not working. I'm sending another watch to Ko for modding. I've just asked him if he can take a look at this too.
Thank you for your help!

Hopefully it'll be something really obvious like the rotor screw has come out, I've had that a couple of times!

Can you hear the rotor moving?

These movements are about $20, so don't spend too much getting it fixed

Alex,
So, would you recommend just replacing the movement if needed? As far as working on these myself, I'm not there yet. I'd still have to pay someone to replace it for me.

Alex is right, replacing the movement would be the much cheaper alternative, but if the problem is just an unattached rotor, you can just screw it by yourself after opening the case back. You can also ask someone to do it for you, that way, you'll learn how to open the case back next time, just don't spend more that 20 bucks for repair

If you can't hear the rotor moving when you shake the watch, it is probably a 2 minute fix, 5 if you can't find the duct tape for 3 minutes!

If you can here it spinning, either take it to a watchsmith and ask them to do nothing more than whip the back off and look at the inside to see if there is anything obvious going on, or buy a replacement movement from Ofrei or Cousins (depending on where you live) and swap it out.

If you're in the UK, send it to me and I'll take a look for nothing

Alex, thank you for the offer. I just sent another watch to Ko, here in the CONUS, and asked if he could take a look. He said sure so I included this watch. I really need to learn to work on these myself eventually.
