There's a market for that smart watch, when at the gym. I have an ipod nano with the screen and a few watch skins. It works great when jogging or at the gym. But whenever I am not doing these two activities a real watch (quartz or mechanical) is on my wrist.

Interesting article. I do think that the Swiss watch industry will not be affected much as it was in the 70's. Why, because the watch is more like a jewel now than it was before. Before the smart watches, there were cell phone and other stuff around to tell time and people still like to have a watch on their wrists. Smart watches will not last long, IMO.
People who wear mechanical watches today will not be ditching them for some ugly computer watch. I think the users of smartwatches will be those who currently do not wear a watch or wear a low-end watch (i.e. those who don't care about watch style or brands).
If push comes to shove, and smartwatches start offering some huge benefit to my daily life, then I will wear two watches--mechanical that I love on my left wrist and the computer on my right.

mech watches are a desire, a passion. telling time by looking at your phone/car dash/buddys wrist/lap top/tablet/public clock in grand central etc, can save you 1000's of dollaros. thinking the need for a watch is motivation behind buying one is just silly.
mech watches will remain popular, just like boobs. after being breast fed, you don't really need it, but you will stop and look at 'em when ever you see a nice pair, and you will even directly or indirectly, throw 1000's of dollars after getting your hands on 'em. much like watches in many ways.
we should rename the "setting crown" to "watch nipple"
