Why do so many prefer the sub over the GMT II?

I just don't get it... similar watches, IMO the GMT just looks so much better. I can understand if your reason is polished center links on the GMT but that is only a recent change. Is it just the fact that the sub is the most rep'd watch from the beginning and the popularity has just grown over the years? Thoughts?

The historical relevance is what attracts many to the sub. It's an iconic watch.

Sub VS GMT

Well it is hard to convince a watch aficionado that airline pilots don't need a Submariner to go diving. After all a scuba diver does not fly planes in his wetsuit. Overheard this conversation by a big time vendor on Canal St. Any truth to this...........or do I need another drink here !! :hehehe:

I like the insert of the gmt when it comes to ceramic inserts, but you can't beat the sub in aluminum!
I can't stand the skinny weaksauce markings in the ceramic bezel of the sub rep (at least in the noob)

I prefer the GMT but so much history with the SuB.

In addition they seem to be at the right price point for entry level ROLEX.

Affordability is the most important factor to purchase point.

I prefer the GMT; but, for me it is a tool. I keep the main dial set to local time, the GMT hand set to the office (London), and the bezel set to home (Was Chico CA, now it is SLC UT) so I know when to call my wife.

The facts are, I can not see this as being a feature that is at all useful to very many people. Yes, carrying a second watch in the pocket, like some of the people I work with do, works; but, I like having all the timezones laid out on my watch.

If I had a normal job (oh how I dream of having a normal job) I doubt I would have multi time zones. GMT watches are entirely unheard of in China because China only has one time zone. As such it is a pretty uncommon feature.

I would suspect that form most other people there are not many other timezones, that are not so local that it is easy to remember, that really matter to them. If it isn't useful then it is unnecessary clutter.

GMT all the way. Especially vintage, nothing beats an old 1675 with a faded insert and patinized tritium. I ended up with a mk1 dial gen from 1968. A lot more affordable than a 1680 from that period, and more watch IMHO.

I do think that the smaller crown is a turn-off to a lot of dudes.

Gmt better. Gmt have better design at the bezel. Looks more complicate as i like it. Iy has the gmt function which looks more into business man. The bracelet of gmt is more classy due to PCL. The bi rotation bezel is my toy.

I have both.. I wear the sub more, because as you mentioned the polished midlinks are just a bit to flashy for me.

I still love the watch and wear it occasionally.

I like both. I think the GMT is a cleaner / dressier watch for some reason. If I could only buy one if these in a gen, it would be the GMT IIc.

They are both great watches but from a genuine watch perspective, the 3185 and 3186 movements are the best deals on the planet. They are awesome movements and make a used Explorer II or a 16710/116710 simply fantastic bargains. BK has said that if you were to own a gen Rolex, anything with a 3185 or 3186 is what you want. Any other watch just tells time and date. Big deal. A regulated and serviced ETA will accomplish the same thing. But a 3185 and 3186 are just works of art.

The GMT also has a lot of interesting and fascinating history dating back to around the same era, so it comes down to personal preference. Granted, the submariner and later the Sea Dweller indeed carry the lion's share for rich history.

So from a gen perspective, you get far more bang for the buck and much more value with a 3185 or 3186 movement.

From a rep perspective, go for whatever you prefer.

Because James Bond and Steve McQueen never wore a GMT.

Actually, James Bond wore a simple Oyster Perpetual, which is similar to the Explorer 1. Ian Fleming based his character's choice in watches on his own personal watch, which was an Oyster Perpetual. It was Albert "Cubby" Broccoli who introduced the submariner to the James Bond franchise during the filming of "Dr. No."

I've got a gen 1967 GMT, and a ff 5513...love them both on an oyster bracelet. The GMT is lower profile than the Sub....and with the black insert, the GMT becomes a new watch!
