I tried my hand at some basic mods today. Thought I would apply a little silicone grease to all the gaskets for some basic waterproofing. Thus far I've managed to scracth the hell out of my DSSD case back but NOT get it off, and I broke the keyless works on my brand-new-haven't-even-worn-yet explorer 2 ... today has not gone well.

Ahhh mate happened to all of us once. I did this probably 2-3 times already. Heartbreaking especially on a new piece you havent had the chance to enjoy.

That's too bad. I greased the seal on mine just last week.
I used a sticky ball (available at Amazon, DX Extreme, etc) to remove the caseback and a watch holder.
Right tools make it easy.

Also broke the keyless on a watch I had for a few hours trying to be adventurous (taking smudge from dial that wasnt obvious in at QC)

Be sure to learn from it but also remember - it can be fixed and isnt a hard job for a professional

I also use a stricky ball - hasn't failed me yet

I tried a sticky ball, a wad of tape, and a jaxa wrench (the culprit for the scratches)... this thing just does not want to come off. When I was debating throwing it out a window try opening it, realized it was time to put it up and take a break.

The difficult part about using a stcky ball on the DSSD, is that it has the metal insert that doesnt twist. So you would have been trying to move the insert without actually loosening the metal ring that screws on.

As you alluded to in a previous post OP, sometimes it is better to walk away and fight another day.

I've had some potential catastrophes averted by just putting everything down and re-approaching. Conversely, I've FUed plenty of times because I didn't take my own advice.

That makes sense. Once I build my courage back up I'll track down a dedicated oyster case tool.

Hah... Reminds me of one of the first watches I bought.

It was a v5 PO and when I finally received it I attempted to grease the caseback and crown. Next thing I knew, I had pushed too hard and my keyless needed to be reset. Off to the watchsmith...

It came back and I wasn't happy with the time it was keeping so I attempted to self regulate it. Well, I pushed too hard on the two piece regulator and the balance spring unravelled. Off to the watchsmith...

See a pattern? :)

I finally replaced the movement with a swiss 2824 as well as the full franken monty and used the old asian 2824 as a test movement to learn the skills needed to mod my own watches.

In any case, while it sucked and almost put a stop to the enjoyment of this hobby, it ultimately pushed me further into it. I've since gotten the proper tools and been able to replace completely break down and oil a movement. The right tools definitely make the difference between a good job and an 'alright' job.

Good luck and if you don't have the tools, I'd suggest sending the watch to a watchsmith to get the keyless fixed rather than cause more harm.

I messed up the keyless works on a 5512 I was modding and fixing it (using a tutorial on here) was one of the most satisfying things I've ever done with a watch!

Good luck with yours

Console yourself, mate. We're all on a learning curve, albeit in a few different places.

Golden rules with modding and repairs -
1. Be methodical, if you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail
2. Be patient, when things are getting to you, walk away, count to 1000 slowly
3. See rule #2

Ditto that. Mine was a Ploprof V2.
I put the money I was going to pay a watch smith to fix it into some basic tools and fixed it myself. Scary? You bet! Satisfying? Incredibly!

It gets easier with time and patience! I knocked the little clutch out of place trying to reset two stems this past weekend on two really nice ETA's ....I was just telling Rudy I was going to have to tear into two movements this weekends...lol I don't care how many times a stem goes in and locks easy there's always one or two that just don't......

and BTW as far as case backs on Rollies go, keep your damn balls and tape! never has worked on a watch older then a month...... get one of these,,,, great little investment!

I got shot down by the first watch smith I tried. Trying another, but ordered some dedicated tools. :dig:

I had 3 days of really bad modding too.

First off, I have scratched my black sub very deeply before when I was trying to pry the bezel off, and it broke my heart.

The second one is when I unconsciously placed the movement, dial down, on rusty screwdrivers, then 10 minutes after, the rusts stuck within the lume indexes. Oh my god.

and the last is when I pushed the crown releasing button too hard that it broke, which locks the crown in place. Therefore I can't put back my sub's crown and it doesn't latch to set the time and date anymore!

Sad story of my black sub.
