Hello.

Tried searching for this, but I keep hearing people saying they oil or grease the bracelet steel strap on their watches.

1) Why is this done? What benefits?

2) How does one go about doing it?

Thanks!

Steel bracelets on reps don't usually have the 'silky' smooth finish and feel of the equivalent gens. This is typically due to poor manufacturing tolerance control. As a consequence, the bracelets tend to be a bit 'creaky' and individual links can stick and bind together a bit.

Soaking a rep bracelet in say baby oil overnight in a sealed plastic bag, can help to reduce friction between the individual links and help create a more 'silky' feel.

After soaking, rinse and wash the oil off with mild soap and water. The baby oil oil will also help remove the machine shop grease and thus assists in improving shine. Remember oil dissolves oil.

Take the bracelet off the watch, and throw it, the endlinks (if any), and springbars into a plastic baggie with some baby oil. Use enough oil to cover everything. Give it a day or two. When you take everything out, wash it with water and mild soap.

The bracelet will feel a lot better and will rattle less.

Other people use different solutions. I stick with baby oil because even if it seeps into your skin, it's non-toxic. It works fine.
