Too pretentious/honest for a REP?

I'd like to buy an Explorer 1 rep because I like the style of it, and I haven't found a gen watch that has that understated sporty look under $300. Most of them are boring and there's no point in forcing myself to buy something I don't like, right?

However, I'm worried that I might feel bad wearing the rep. I know somewhere in my heart I would feel bad wearing a watch that isn't really what is says on the dial. It's not my issue with the ethics of reps - I don't mind - it's just that I might feel guilty wearing a rep. Like someone might ask me, "Wow nice Rolex" and I would feel pangs of guilt.

On the other hand, the Explorer 1 isn't a complicated watch to feign, and I really don't pay attention to my watch for most of the day, so it might not even be an issue. Not to mention, the Exp is my grail, so if I had the cash I'd buy it right away.

Oh, it doesn't help that I'm 19 either. Even though I don't look like it, I doubt they'd believe I'd really have a Rolex.

What do you think??

I'd think you should not care that much what people think.
Buy the rep and enjoy it!

Moreover I would say that the Exp 1 flies under most people's watch radar, so hopefully (!) you won't receive any comments at all. ;)

Hey, and if the lack of attention gets on your nerves later you still can switch to a full gold daytona with diamond dial. :D:

So basically I'd say "Just do it!"

Thanks for the advice

I don't know, I just might do it. The Explorer is such an awesome watch.

What's the big deal?

So your 19 and if your "overall appearance" does not fit to the act of wearing a rolex (public school, go by bus, wear out old clothing of your older brother, ... ) than just say that the watch was a gift from your uncle, grandfather or any other distant relative ...

You're over-thinking this, my first watch was a Speedmaster when I was at school in my early teens, some of my friends while in their teens as well were carrying from Casio to Cartier, no one cared really, and I only noticed because I've always been into watches.

Anyways, buy for yourself my friend, why should you pay attention to what someone else says? Plus, most will ask if it's either fake or just say "nice watch", it's a nice watch after all so why feel bad about it? Plus who in the world is going to tell it's a fake? :)

No one will call you out, and if they say "Nice Rolex" than just say thanks and be done with it :D It's not unusual that people inherit their fathers or grandfathers watch (which in some cases might be an exp)

An used one can be bought for 2500$ so it's not something too obvious as if you would rock a patek philippe

Oh, I wish there were so many nice reps out there when I was 19 ;-)))
Anyway, go for it with no worries...
If you will buy a nice copy, with a movement service, a good reluming and waterproofing, you will have it long enough to decide whether you go for the gen or not.
Enjoy the rep game!

Save up and buy the gen. Then people will still think its fake and you will feel like punching them when they call you out on a gen.

Or buy the rep and have the same scenario.

Unless you drive a Ferrari a lot of people will assume it is fake either way.

Just enjoy the watch.

Relax. Just wear what that satisfy you. We only have one life and live it meaningfully.. When I'm 11, i wear a tag heuer watch.

You can always get an homage if you can't handle the rep.

If I bought watches based on what I thought others would think...well I'd be a fool...(and probably not have many watches)

Nobody I know outside of the crew here could tell a good rep from a gen...most couldn't even identify a gen brand if I had one! It really doesn't matter, I wear what I like.

My boss has a gen Sub, he was really impressed with my sterile PAM destro fiddy...was all about it... also never heard of Panerai when I told him about the watch...what does that tell you?

Pick up a nice piece that you like and enjoy it...if you really are that conflicted, you're only 19, start saving your pennies and get a GEN.
