Would you own a rep you couldn't conceivably afford as gen?

Just wondering how many people here would own a rep of a watch they couldn't conceivably own as a gen?

Im 28 and run a small hotel/shooting lodge. Whilst I do ok and have owned £3-5k watches in the past I couldn't conceivably afford a rosé gold AP ROO/daydate 2 etc etc.

As such I won't buy these as a rep. If they were gen it wouldn't bother me if people thought they were reps but people looking at my wrist and instantly think my rep is just that would. Besides I'd hate to get called out as I'm sure it would be pretty embarrassing.

So i Stick to base model Panerai's (watches ived owned as gen) but I'm wondering if this is a factor for others?

I'm sure most will say its not and buy te wages you want etc, but I'd feel uncomfortable being obvious but maybe I'm crazy lol

Affordability of the gen is something I consciously bear in mind when purchasing reps. I completely understand your point of view. I don't (and probably wouldn't) purchase any AP reps for this exact reason!

The only thing keeping me from owning an AP diver really. People in my age group seem to think differently of you when they realize you have 12K strapped to your wrist

When I get older, I doubt anyone would say shit though.

I just don't care. I like the watch - I buy it. No any moral dilemma.

I simply cannot justify paying $30-70K for a watch. I am much happier hanging with those that do, with my rep that is 95% of the gen for $600. Believe me, very few of the people who own gens in my crowd have a quarter of the knowledge of the people on here concerning the tells between reps and gens! I am perfectly content to wear my AP reps!

I don't currently own any that I can't afford. I have before, and I'm planning on getting an AP Rubberclad Gold. I just have to be careful where I wear it.

The fact is that almost nobody will ever notice your watch more than to say, "Nice watch." I wear watches not as a status symbol but for their beauty and artistry. Saying you wouldn't buy a rep because you couldn't afford the gen is like saying you wouldn't hang a print on your wall because it wasn't the original Mona Lisa. It's the art, craftsmanship, design, ingenuity, and aesthetic beauty that really matter. But that's just my opinion.

I personally dont care what people think. if i like the way it looks I buy it, period. Ohh and the last guy who tried to call me out on a watch publicly spent 3 days in the hospital.

Poor sucker, he caught me on a day that i was wearing my Gen gold daytona.

:spank:

I just got an AP RCRG, and it is amazing. Believe me, unless you go to an AD, 99% of the world will never think that it's a rep, and many of my friends have various AP gens and love mine!

Yes, I couldn't possibly own a real 5218-201 PAM. :) Nor a DSC (if Rolex ever does get it out to production anyway). But I really do not care whether or not I could afford the gen. I just choose to buy the watch because I like to see it on my wrist.

I guess for me its not whether I could afford it or not but rather would the money be better spent on something else. Can I afford an AP Safari like my new REP? I guess so but would I ever spend to buy a GEN...I doubt it. These REPS are amazing. I doubt anyone would call me out on it.

seriously, I'm a college student and I'm sporting a 218. lol.. what's the going price on those? $100k? 99% won't know the diff between that and another Panerai.

I have bought the AP diver also..

who cares if they look at you funny.

They don't make any watches that Luthier can't afford.
Hey, KGB, glad to see you after so many years!
No, it's not the point, can I afford or not. I can't morally justify wearing $25,000 watch, knowing, that such a money can LITERALLY save lives of hundreds of hungry children.

My first rep was one of a $300.000 watch. I like the watch, I'll buy. I'm not trying to impress anyone or pass them as gens. They are simply just beautiful watches and most of the people don't even pay attention to them. Hell, even me few days ago I looked in the mirror and thought I have a Pam on my wrist, five minutes later I realized it was a Bret
And if anyone ever notices my watch and says something, which happens really, really rarely I have no problem to tell them it's a rep and tell them a little about this hobby, if they are to stupid to understand, f**k'em
