I want to buy new daily beater/daily swimmer for the beach/pools/hottubs and I'm set on getting a vintage sub/sd. Which one would you chose out of the white 1680 or the red 1665 and why? My current collection consists of an AP Diver, PAM 111, and EXII polar.

I think I'm leaning towards the 1665sd because I like the domed crystal since it sets the watch apart. What are all of your opinions?

+1 on the 1680. I can't do anything with a phony helium valve plus its a extra step to waterproof it
Is it a working Helium valve or is it just there for show? Although I'm probably wrong, I was under the impression that the HE valve was just for show and wasnt actually functioning.

Hot tubs ? LOL
I have one at my house that I use everyday in the summer. Even if the watch is water proofed, I'm still concerned about the hottub due to the steam. What do you think?

The TD I typically use is about $50 more than the other two TD's that I'm considering using. Is it bad etiquette to ask my TD to drop his price $50 in order to price match?

You can sure try if you've ordered other watches from him in the past and you have a good working relationship with him. You want to throw him the repeat business but the same watch is elsewhere for less. The worst he will say is no, he can't do it. It's a tough one because you don't know the other dealers. Good luck!

That said, I got the red 1680. From a gen perspective, you can find red 1680s for high single digit thousands in great shape. I found a 1972 one for $9Kish. A gen 1665, on the other hand, is going to be $15,000+ and much more for a cherry one.

What people mean by the HE valve not functioning is literally it does not function. It is not sealed or anything so you MUST seal it from the inside before you take this watch into the water. The real functioning valve only allows gas to escape from the inside out, but these rep "valves" allow water to enter from the outside in. Brilliant design!!

So you have to epoxy it from the inside to seal that bastard closed before you ever hope of bringing this into the water.

Thank you for such an informative answer. I think I'm going to go with the 1680 but ill keep updating this thread.

I ordered the 1680 white dial from Ryan today. Hopefully he sends it out tomorrow. If I want to get the domed, cyclopsless crystal (I think its called a T19?), will that fit into this watch without any modification?

Looks great to me! Get a gen crown on there and with your crystal replacement it is going to look awesome! Be sure to post tons of pics of this baby when you get it and especially after you do your modifications!

Have to say 1665. I've built tons of 1680s and they all did little for me, but it took only one 1665 to fall in love with this watch.
