Keyless Works question...

I re-attached (with locktite) the crown on the winding stem of my DSSD, but after carefully re-installing I can't change the date. The second position on the stem won't move and I'm not going to force it.

Does this sound like a keyless issue, or is it possible that I didn't screw the stem into the crown tight enough, and now that little added length is preventing the stem from engaging in the second position? BTW all other positions function well.

If you can wind the movement and change the time, but can not change the date, it very well could be. Do make sure you are not between 9pm and 3am and retry to change the date. If you cant, you have a sprung keyless.
If you cant wind the watch or change the date, the stem might be too short now, due to the crown sticking out farther than it was before.

...and if I understand some of the tutorials, fixing the keyless is a matter of breaking it down and reassembling it?

Definitely sounds like a keyless issue. Dial and hands come off, then you'll be able to get to the parts easily.

Thanks...waiting for delivery of some tools right now, then I'll practice on one of my canal st. zombies before attempting the DSSD. Meanwhile I'll study the tutorial.

Don't be too intimidated by trying it, it looks complicated but the guides on here are excellent. Be methodical and make sure you've got some safe places to put all the parts in the order you take them off.

The main thing I found when I fixed my first keyless is how tiny some of the parts are and how steady you need your hand to be, not one to tackle hungover!

Good luck and enjoy - the sence of achievement is great!

Thanks for the encouragement. I've always been pretty good at building stuff, so I'm looking forward to it.

One note...I just finished replying to a guy named Hector in FL who created a pretty good video of the breakdown of a 21J. Someone pointed out that while there are plenty of tutorials with stills, there are not many videos on this. He's proposing to do more...might be very useful if he does.
