So how hard is it to install the TC 16600 dial on the old SSD v2?

So I finally snagged one of these (thanks KBH!) and it's on its way to me along with a TC 93160A, but I really like the looks of the TC SD dial and hands. Is there some consensus on a preferred method of installation (or professional installer)? I'm not much for the DIY stuff, so I'll probably end up sending it off to someone, I'm just looking for advice. I read KBHs original thread about the dial being too big, so I know it won't be a straight fit.

And what else do I need to do to trick this watch out? I'm thinking SL dial/hands, possibly gen insert (I think this one has an epoxy modded pearl, but nothing's better than gen)...anything else? TC crown?

Help me out folks! I want to turn this SSD into a real keeper like my TC sub w/ gen insert.

I would definitely go with the gen insert, plus maybe a replacement crystal, although not sure which ones will fit, maybe a Clark's one?

The TC crown might be a nice swap as well, Would definitely recommend sending of to a modder, although my modding skills are non existent and I tend to break things.

Sounds like an interesting project, this is one I hope to do myself sometime in the future.

Unfortunately I don't think the TC dial fits the old SSD as KBH found out himself.

http://forum.replica-watch.info/vb/showthread.php/tc-sd-dial-108331?t=108331

I read that thread, but ultimately didn't people decide that the TC dial could pretty easily just be sanded around the edges to make it fit? I realize that's a job for someone who knows what they're doing (in other words, not me) but would it be an unreasonable task for one of our modders?

Or is it just as good an idea to have the SSD dial lumed?

Guess it all depends on the quality of the dial markers and the text on the dial itself, and how much that matters to you.

From experience in reducing dial diameters (I've done a 29mm down to 27mm before) with a non-gloss dial it might be ok. But there's a massive risk of chipping and cracking the coating on a gloss dial. I would refuse if someone asked me to do it, but we have other modders on here with much more experience and better tools than I do that might be willing considering it's quite a small difference.

What might actually be better is finding someone with a lathe who's willing to remove the small amount of material from inside the case to allow the dial to fit. A much neater solution rather than risking the dial itself.

You should have told me. I usually make it a point not to work on other peoples watches but you could have had the dial and hands sent to me if it hadn't already been shipped and I've have installed them for you.

It's really not difficult with a Dremel and a small grinding stone attachment. You only have to take about a 1/2 mm off the edge and it doesn't affect the location of the numbers. They are printed pretty much the same as on the original dial. The paint gets a little raggedy around the edge but it doesn't crack and the edge is totally covered by the case.

If you plan on going all out on modding with CG re-shaping etc., I'd suggest a new crown and tube, only because it's much easier to re-work the crown guards with the tube removed and I haven't had much luck in removing tubes without wrecking them. Also the used crown that I used, although fully functional, isn't the smoothest one around. That's, of course, up to you and whomever you have doing the work.

And my favorite mod is still the gen insert, mostly for the gen pearl.

I f Bonesy's not interested, why not give Jackjo a shout and see what he says? He's the master SSD modder.

One last thing. I don't know of any gen crystals that fit the SSD. I think you're stuck with the one you have, which is not a bad thing.

Thanks KBH, though honestly by the time I had considered any of this the watch was in the mail. It was kind of an impulse buy, but given the rarity and the price I couldn't pass it up. So I guess right now I will start gathering parts, and then once I have everything I need I'll send it off to someone.

Does anyone know if the dials and hands from the new "ultimate SD" and the ssd are interchangeable? Perhaps I could just buy one of the new SDs, swap out the lumed parts, and then sell it with the ssd dial Nd hands at a discount?

Or maybe just have some lug holes drilled and install a 16660 dial? This watch is gonna keep me up at night...

The dials from the new SLSD do fit the SSD case. I wore one like that this past summer. I still had the lugs drilled.

Interesting note, the SlSd case is a perfect fit for the gen 3135 movement.

This $228 thing I got in my watchbox can take a gen Rolex calibre 3135?

The new Superlumed SD??

Any pics at all???
