Why is lume such a big deal?

Right .. so 45 minutes is realistic for watches that claim to be super-lumed or have had a lume servicing. Thats a whole lot different then talking about lume working when going to bed and then not working 6 hours later!! lol

I have 2 crappy reps - PAM090 dreadfull lume and PAM088 slightly better
Both need to be upgraded soon.

It depends on what you mean when you say the lume is "working". After 6 hours,'it's not glowing in the same way where you walk in the room and say "wow, look at that!." But if it's real superluminova used, it should still be producing some light 6-8 hours after a full charge.

I have Pam super reps, a TC sub, and an AP diver, and all of the. Are legible in a dark bedroom at 6am, provided they were sitting under a lamp before I went to bed (I keep my watch box on my beside table). I'm not saying that's reason enough to pay more for superlumed, but it's not defunct after an hour like some people seem to be suggesting. Just not as obvious.

I know I am new to this but neither of the reps that I have will still be bright enough to see after sitting in the dark for hours. Is this what super lume is all about?

Out of all my watches, the only one that has good lume is my PAM. I took some lume pictures so I charged the lume fully with a flashlight. I took the pics and then went to sleep in a completely dark room. I woke up like 4 hours later and when I stood up I noticed the PAM on my table, it was still readable even though 4 hours had passed and it had been sitting in the dark all that time. I was pretty impressed actually.

If I ever bought a watch strictly for lume, I would get a Ball:

2 Balls are better than one (and far better than none) >.>

You can't beat those tiny radioactive tubes. So cool. Ugly watches, but cool lume tubes.

I kind of like being able to check the time when I wake up to pee..............

Hell yeah AND
My wife sleeps on left side, where the clock is and she is 3 pillow stacking igget so I can't see what time it is w/o a effort, which I have no desire to do at oh, 2am. So, BOOM, look at my wrist and there she blows LUME baby. Plus its just cool....glow in the dark stuff is COOL. Just is.

you need lume when you go from bright to dark places (like leaving restaurant and getting into your car). Yes you can check your cell phone but I rather glance at my wrist than get a device out of my pocket and press a button.

Lume (on gens and reps) is not suppose to last all night. Those folks with owl eyes that claim that is just silly. After a couple of hours there will be a vestigial amount of brightness that's mostly useless.

Lume should bright enough for at least 1 hr so you can comfortably check the time.

The same way that I don't really care for date on my watches, the lume is one of those features that differentiate certain models (color, application, etc.).

In the past I used to spend a lot of money on reluming now I just choose the models that come with a reasonable stock one.

It's also a mistake to think all gens have great lume. That varies a lot and the most traditional houses like Patek, VC, AP etc don't really spend that much time on it. Dive watches are the exception.

My watch lumed with 65 micron lume still glows after 24 hours in complete darkness, you just need your eyes adjusted to darkness to see it. Useful when you wake at night. Well, actually not that useful as I already have an alarm clock but that doesn't stop me from looking at the superlumed watch every time I wake up and get all excited on how cool that is.

So we've established that it's not important, but it's cool.

Most of us get up in the night and pretend to our partners that we need to pee, when actually we just want to look at the lume on our watches.

At least one of us thinks that you 'need' lume when you go from the brightness of a restaurant to the darkness of a car, and presumably has a car with no clock in it.

Another one of us drives through tunnels while looking at the green glow of his watch.

We can't manage the effort of looking over our wives to look at the alarm clock.

Two balls are better than one, and lube is just sexy.

So one question. When your wife says 'The only difference between men and boys, is the size of their c0ck and the price of their toys', do you, like me, get really p1ssed off? :biglaugh:

You know what's funny about this question....
When I recently got back into watches (First of this year) and I'm in my mid-20's:

The entire lume prospect seemed odd to me. It made me think of those Indiglo watches from when I was a teenager that were soooo tacky (hold the button to make the entire digital screen glow!)
Now I love Lume LOL !!

And I agree with 45acp (seems we're in minority here bud):
A good lumed watch - my gens, plus I immediately send my reps out to be superlumed - should basically last all night. at 6-7am I can still EASILY read the time.....

I would say longer than 2or 3secs...
But I do agree with you (as posted above) - not a lot of time
You want to see good lume token?
Go spend $500 on a quartz Lum-Tec

I usually charge mine by holding it up to the bulb on my lamp, I don't go d that the charge really increases after a few seconds.

Under a good supply of UV (ie: a UV fluro or strong direct daylight) the lume in a watch has 3/4 of it's charge within 30 seconds and 90% of it within 45 seconds.

Wow, good to know. I've been flashing the watches with a small UV for 3-5seconds and then taking a pic. I didn't know it took that long to fully charge.
