Is it possible to replace the dial and back of the case if you have never attempted to take apart and put back together a watch before?

Of course its possible...you better practice on a watch you dont like first though! Oh and make sure you get good tools, dont skimp on that.

One pro tip, matte dials are much less likely to damage and are easier to clean, so much more forgiving than glossy dials.

It is more than possible, it is easy, the second time you do it!

The first time is very scary, however, if you are prepared it will go well.

My tips for any watch work would be:

1) Ensure that you have everything you need to hand on the bench in front of you so you don't have to wander off halfway through to get something.

2) Have some pots, ziploc bags, boxes or even shot glasses to put all the parts in individually so you don't lose them or mix then up.

3) Have a camera, paper and pen on hand to get a picture and notes of everything before you start taking things apart, much more reliable than your memory!

4) A decent pair or pointed tweezers is a must IMO as they give you the ability to retrieve anything from inside the watch and also to poke the keyless works release.

5) Good lighting is essential for finding whatever you drop on the floor!

Other than that, work slowly and methodically, and if you find your hands are shaking just have a break!

Make sure you protect the face when you pull the hands, a piece of paper with a slit cut in to to slide over the face works well.

When you've finished, check for fingerprints and fluff, clean, then check again, reclean and check again! That way you should only leave one or two!

Good luck.

Its possible, if you do your research before attempting, and bought the correct tools.

Most definitely possible and a nice skill to aquire.

As others have said, practise first on a watch that means nothing to you, use the best tools you can, work methodically, and take your time.

It's not rocket science, but it does require a certain amount of planning.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll practice on some of the non-working watches in the junk drawer first.

yep, thats a good way to start. I had a bunch of old crap 21j reps I ripped apart before I tackled anything valuable.
