Why do we love vintage?

Tell me your opinions.

With me, it's not just watches. Older Jaguars, Corvettes, Aston Martins. 1960's and 70's Nikons, Canons, Pentaxes. P47 Thunderbolt, P51D Mustang, Spitfire, Hurricane.

I have my own theories about why we love them, but I'd love to hear yours.

My theory is that your appreciation of vintage items is proportional to age

The older you are, the more you like vintage items

Then i was young, vintage was another way of saying: old, crusty rubbish

There is nostalgia associated with vintage items that new products have not yet "earned". Plus there's a scarcity value due to their ever dwindling supplies. They ain't makin any more of them.

I'll take a '64 DB4 please.

My mother collected older things back when vintage=junk. Since I grew up with a home full of that sort of decor, it is now what my home is filled with. Some are family pieces, too.

Old soul, I guess since it has been my preference throughout my adult life.

What I don't get is new furniture that is "distressed" to appear old. Don't get that at all. Same with a watch.

I think exclusivity has a large part but it also depends on the item. Yes there are some people who collect "vintage" ford pintos but a classic car collector is looking for an old Rolls or Bentley or old mopar, what I'm getting at is its not really collectible unless it was desirable at one point in its life.

I prefer the vintage watches over the current ones. Right now I have nearly 10 vintage Omegas and Rollies. Gen of course. I still have my Pentax MX manual film camera although I don't use it anymore.

I used to wear vintage suits from my father's days, but I've now outgrown his size. I used to love the narrow vintage neckties too.

I agree with the older you are, the more you appreciate vintage

I know I'm an oddball but I'm 22 years old and I love vintage. I have two gen cartier tanks an recently sold my circa 1950's Rolex snap back and I have several vintage cars. I'm not trying to brag because most of them are in rough shape but for me it's not an age thing as much as a taste thing.

Not so oddball. My daughter is 21 and loves Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC etc.

I thought I would love vintage and bought a MBK 5513, but couldn't fall in love with it.

In the end I thought it was too small, even though I don't go above 42mm, and I need my lume.

As someone who specialises in restoration architecture, I feel we love "period" because of the innate desire to "continue the story" of whatever the thing is .... a home, interior, piece of furniture, watch, ring etc....

When I design (and make/install) my interiors, I NEVER make things all match. What I work to do is make things appear as if they have been "lovingly maintained for generations"

My clients take a very deep breath, extend trust to me, and without exception, end up utterly delighted - often to the point of tears.

That makes me feel good

:)

That's a very beautiful thing. When you are able to show passion and pride in what you do it makes it that much more meaningful for all parties involved. I do the same with my work. I'm passionate about it and take pride in every aspect.

It can't be confined to the age-generation thing.
I love J.S. Bach and ragtime, I ain't that old.

Sometimes it's just that modern design or music attempt a somersault hoping in something shocking new, and all they do is creating something abusively ugly.
Lack of culture and skills leads new generation artists to reinvent the umbrella.

I agree with this. I know 20 year olds who love vintage, and 50 year olds who love everything modern.

When William Lyons penned the 'E' type Jaguar, the shape and the overall design were so perfect, they still stand up 50 years on. I know young people who will point out that the latest Mitsubishi Evo is a better performer, but I don't know any that will say the Jag is ugly.

The stuff that catches my eye now at 46 is often the same stuff I wanted when I was 13 years old! Porsches from the 70s and 80s would be an example. The earlier 356 doesn't really evoke much emotion in me nor do the later water cooled Porsches.

With watches it 60s to 80s vintage stuff - I'm not that interested in 20s, 30s, 40s, and most 50s era watches.

Vintage pieces are popular because you can't buy the time back but you can buy a watch or item that brings you back to a sertian time, and ppl like that.

My oldest vintages are an Omega Seamaster from 1959 and a Rolex Oysterdate from 1956. Both still running strong.
