Been scammed - interesting method - don't get caught out!!

For normal paypal sales:
For the seller (the TD) to be covered by Paypal protection he has to send the item to the buyers verified address with tracking details....use any other address and he would automatically lose any paypal claim against him.
If a buyer wishes to have an item sent to an address other than his verified address he must sign into his paypal account and add the extra address to his account and then stipulate the new address during the payment process...the seller can then send the item to this new address and be still covered.
In this case: TDs should simply not send anything to an address other than a buyers verified address - covers both the seller and the buyer. Buyers should always include the delivery address in the comment section of the payment as extra cover.

Omg I knew I should have listened to my gut feeling that effing SOB lacosta scammed me as well. I just filed a claim and Andrew responded. It's not even about the loss of $$ but the fact I was tricked. I hope that as gets what's coming to him.

Those are some funny questions to ask!
I'll make sure to ask for the seller to take a pic of himself wearing the watch, with his face showing, showing his broken leg, and his/her partner as well.

I never gave him my PayPal ahead of time and payed to the PayPal address he gave me and then told him I had paid. So I'm not even sure how he used me for his payment.

This sale was the first time where I felt something was fishy, or off. I I should have trusted my instinct. It was hard to be doubtful because lacosta had been active and somewhat of a long time member. Not the typical scammed profile. Not to mention after reading his past posts, his reason for delaying shipment (he is a traveling student) checked out with claims he made years ago. Sigh. The pit at the bottom of my stomach is getting bigger as I realize I was a pawn.

Man, just thinking about this happening to me sickens me.
I've never had an incident like this, and I do realize this kind of scams are rather rare.
I've sent PP payment as gift a number of times and have gotten the watches safe and sound; but I don't think I would be doing this anymore.

Yeah, Lacosta is full of crap! A student who apparently owns a $9,000 genuine Hublot?..psht.

I know how you feel, I was more annoyed at myself for being tricked in to his little games more than anything. Like I said before, I hope he will not find his way on to these forums again under a different I.P/username.

I have to say I now feel bad for filing a dispute. Andrew was willing to fully refund the amount. I know technically speaking, a refund is in order but it honestly doesn't feel right. Granted I made a mistake as well; tempted by a watch, I blatantly ignored obvious warning signs.

Let this be yet another warning to members. Usually if something seems off, just don't go through with the deal. A brand spanking new member willing to offer you that ridiculous asking price you put up may just be another scammer, and that fishy seeming member with an item for sale that's slightly too good to be true probably is.

Just so something like what happened to Andrew doesn't happen to a member here, ask for a confirmation from the email used in the PayPal ID. At least then you know that the source of the payment is also aware of the sale.

That m-effer lacosta will surely get what is coming to him.

I agree on the whole noob buyer/seller. I can kind of say that not all apples are the same. I have seen some members sell relatively cheap because they either changed their mind and want another watch, or simply want to make a few sales to establish a positive rep. Having said that I know that there is good intentioned buyers here also that are joining everyday. I was once a noob here and it's tough in the sense that basically you are dependent on tds because members are hesitant to sell to you and rightly so...

Noobs, be patient because we (the people who truly are horologists) are tired of the few scammers. It may seem like a close knitted only a few club, but stick around long enough and you will see that this scrutiny makes it safer for us all in the long run.

To be honest I'm surprised a well established dealer would send something to an unverified address - I sell a lot on ebay (iphones mostly) and the golden rule for paypal is you only ever post (with tracking) to a verified address...absolutely no exceptions whatsoever.

I explained why a few pages back mate. A lot of people drop ship using Andrew so they take money from some dude, order the watch from Andrew and pay with the watch being shipped direct to the buyer. This is a large part of some dealer's business.

As I read it, it was like this:

The scammer told the buyer Andrew's PP address.
The scammer then told Andrew that X amount of money has been sent from the X email address.
Then Andrew sent the watch to the scammer's address, thinking it was the scammer who sent the money.
The buyer is then left with nothing.

What a clever douche indeed.

Ok, but then obviously Andrew would know the exact watch and person, and then reveal who he shipped the watch to...so there is no real mystery here...except finding/confronting the person at this point.
