Thought I would catch up over here, I've been posting on HF for a little while with this build, so for those that don't go there very often here's a run down of my new build, there are going to be a lot of pictures.
First of all I bought the case from Silix.
The strap came from an ebay seller and has gone through a few stages of ageing and abuse from me :frusty:
My Athaya dial arrived but had very shallow engravings which proved a problem for the style I wanted to go for.
I had planned to paint it in the faded red brown style seen in some vintages, but I couldn't keep the engravings usable after a few thin coats of paint.
The first attempt at reshaing the case started with the lugs.
Then I moved on to the side crease which has been slowly filed back.
Another attempt at staining the dial this time, thin coat of black matt then deep red in the hope it would leave residue i could work in to.
Epic fail again :frusty:
It was almost there but then some of the black came off.
This one was better until again the paint chipped off.
This is the last attempt, I went for a cream dial, two thin coats, each time scraping out the engravings while the paint was still wet with a needle. then I baked the dial for 10 minutes to harden the paint. The letter fill is from a black crayola crayon.
The radial burn effect comes from mounting the dial gently on to a dremel on a slow spin and dragging a brush with almost dry paint across it.
Some serious filing and grinding on the case now.
Sharpening up the crease between the lugs
a quick mock up with the dial and case
And finally I went back to the dial with some more paint and then lumed the indices which I then stained with coffee, I also added a bit of coffee staining to the surface of the dial making sure I gave it a coat of matt varnish afterwards to seal it.
More to come.........
