Spider Webbing / Crazing Explained Via Images..

This is a consolidation of information that I have found on this particular variation/effect that happens to certain Rolex dials..

Do a Google search on ‘Spider-Web Dials’ and you will see Rolex dials with some form of cracking or spider webbing?

Is this normal? Is this a defect? Is this something that is truly desirable?

My understanding is that this had to do with some sort of mixture issue.

I have read from several places where collectors really seem to like this effect. At first I thought nothing of this but once I saw a few more pictures of this effect, I also have to admit that I like it when I see a dial that has the unique cracking.

If I am correct, I dare say that no two spider-web dials are the same, and therefore will allow the watch to have its own ‘individuality’..

As Rolex moved from the matt dial era the gloss/WG surround varity there were those dials (not all) that experienced a flaw in the paint mixture leading to what is now commonly refer to as "spiderwebbing" or crazing.

It seems that the early gloss dials in the transitional references, 16750, 16760, 16800 and 168000 and maybe others had defective paint mixtures which causes this spider webbing.

In ceramics it's called 'crazing' and is a result of temperature changes which cause the thin layer of glaze to fracture. Not sure if it's the same with Rolex, but it does look similar.

Some dials have been reported to have actually lost some of its gloss and are becoming or have become matt.

Here are some examples:

And there seems to be a lot more images found on the GMT Master 1675/16750

So are you a fan of this? Would you pass up on an opportunity to purchase such a dial for a Franken build?

I snagged mine for less than US$100 on the bay and here’s my completed build.

Technique??? Only gen dials have this..don't think anyone can replicate this with aftermarket or rep dials but please try it if you can..

This title did say explained..if it was a mod, i would have stated it to be a mod..

Duh!! Just read the white text. Interesting if it could be done. Matt paint over gloss followed by heat can sometimes reproduce that effect on some materials, although theres no control over the result. If anyone here can do it I'd be interested.

Interesting topic!

Some varnish products exist to produce antique and cracking look on paintings. Results a kind of random, but with some practice, you manage to produce nice effects. Maybe it's a hint and could be used to try to reproduce spider dials look?

I did a google search to find a picture showing such painting realisation with cracking varnish on a painting, and I found it also exists now to do "cracking" effect on nails.

Anyway, here is example on nails :

Who uses such product? Maybe that's designed for Haloween? :)

Seen those sort of nail polishes before..it's basically the paint drying and cracking up..

not too sure if using a clear coat would create the desired effect but that would seriously be a lot of cracking as compared with some of the more subtle cracks as seen in the images above..

It can be replicated.... The same thing happens with vintage guitars that were painted in nitrocellulose paint/lacquer (original fenders and the like).
To reproduce it on a guitar you first wait for the lacquer to fully cure (takes a couple of months!). Then gently warm the surface with a hair dryer, then rapidly freeze using something like this: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00133QBVA/ref=redir_mdp_mobile"]Mueller Coolant Cold Aerosol Spray:Amazon:Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/3163O%2BxvIVL.@@AMEPARAM@@3163O%2BxvIVL[/ame]. You could also place the guitar in a freezer, although the wood could distort.
The reason the cracking originally occurred on guitars was due to sudden extreme changes in temperature (from the stage of a hot sweaty club straight into the back of a cold van in the winter) and the wood expanding and contracting at a different rate to the lacquer.

I've not tried it with a watch dial but the same principle applies... Older paints (like nitrocellulose) are far better as they cure 'brittle' compared to modern finishes which are more flexible.

Hope that all makes sense....?

I've got a dial leftover from a project watch, I'll conduct some experiments and report back!

Certainly will. I'm having a clear out of my watch box at the weekend anyway, so will dig out the dial....

Duh!! Just read the white text.

I was informing the OP that the font was changed(not default white) and cant be seen on Taptalk, since the background is the same as the font....But thank you for the words of wisdom Steven Hawkins. :gotgoat:

Nice info here at any rate!

Rolex never said it was more of a personal feel..in fact RSC changed many original dials with their service dials and other parts with service ones and that devalued the watch as it was no longer deemed 'original' to the time period of the watch.

Well it's personal isnt it? One man's meat, another man's poison.. :)
