Which do you prefer? Black or White?

I like the black dial because it's more stricking visually & makes a bolder statement. That's it.

Thanks all for your feedback..there's almost equal weightage on members choosing either black or white..interesting to know this..

well for me, if i had only funds to get a Gen Explorer II, the white 'Polar' will wins hands-down..that's also the reason why i got it..there's something about the white dial that the reps cant seem to get correct..

as for the black Explorer, it is a simple understated timepiece, not as iconic as the Submariner or Datejust and usually goes undetected..which is a good thing especially since it's a rep (yes it's a rep! :D )

Was it cheap getting the Black Explorer to what you see in the pictures? Well yes and no..

It is running on a Swiss (confirmed) ETA 2836-2 with modified GMT function..that came from WBK Stan..

Case, crystal, crown, tube, bracelet and Hands are all from Trevor..I have a spare dial (just in case)..

Dial was sourced by Angus..

How much did it cost in total? I'm not keeping track or wish to do so..but my happiness in having it simply outweights the total cost and definitely way way cheaper than a gen M series..

Now isn't this what having reps is about? Creative Financial Management.. :)

You wrote that you are using a dial sourced through Angus for your black dial but the rest of the watch is from Trevor. How is the dial in Trevor's black version? Was there something wrong with it?

I know your Polar is gen, but do you happen to know how Trevor's polar dial is in comparison with the gen? Just curious to know if you've studied any pics now that you have a gen to use as a comparison. :)

There's nothing wrong with the dial from Trevor..i'm safekeeping it for future use..i'm now contemplating modding my other WBK Stan midcase to get it as skinny as the gen and also drill lug holes in it..

and then building up a rep black K series to accompany my gen Polar..

to be honest, I have not seen any of the newer white Explorer reps..i know they are all superlume and what not..

Even if the factories can get the dial correct, i bought the gen watch partly because of the 3185 Caliber inside.. :)

Great info, thanks. Yes, 3185 or if you can get a 3186 is definitely worth it. This is why I am torn between the Exp 1 and II when it comes to getting my first gen. I am seeing both selling for roughly the same price. I love both watches, but the 3185 is far and away a better movement. That makes the Exp II such a better value for the dollar on the preowned market.

A couple of years ago BK had told me that the Exp II was definitely the watch to buy as a gen precisely because of the 3185 movement. The Exp 1 was a watch to buy as a rep. As I look at preowned gens I keep remembering that...

Spot on mate..i think that review was by By-Tor instead..

The eta 2824 would be an equal match to the 3135 Caliber so nothing to shout about really..besides u can franken the Explorer I by adding a gen dial and other gen parts..it'll still be cheaper than the grey market..

:)

Definitely white... Especially when it glows like a torch!

Nice pic but that's a 15sec exposure lume shot mate..anything would be bright! :)

u should try taking over extended time frames to test how long the rep lume lasts..

I actually had a private conversation with BK via PM over on RG about the subject of Explorers. It was right when the Noob factory discontinued producing the 16710 and Exp II. He had just sold his gen Exp II so while I was asking him about mods on my GMTIIc I started asking him about Explorers and such. He shared with me his views on the 3185 and which watches are worth the money as gens and which are suitable to buy as reps.

The 3185 is an incredible value per dollar and is absolutely worth every penny. Anything with a 3185 is worth buying. It's a reason why I am so torn with getting one of these reps. I want one but I also want the gen, so I am glad I can live vicariously through your photos!

Great idea! That's what I was thinking. Since you've already done it I can follow your lead. This really is an awesome looking rep, by the way.

Gen black is more saleable.

But the wife likes the white better.

Earlier this year you reviewed a different version of the Explorer II. Now that you have this new one, can you share your opinion about how it is different? Does this new version fix some of the flaws you found with the previous version?

I'll do a comparison between rep cases this weekend and maybe a few more details shots between the new rep case and the gen case..
