TC SD Dial - Major Problem!

For those of you that are thinking about swapping out your old SSD dial for the hot new superlumed TC dial.......Forget it. The new dial doesn't fit.

I'm hugely bumbed out right now. After taking apart my favorite, the SSD and putting on the nice shiny new dial, setting the hands perfect for date swap at midnight, it doesn't fit in the case.

TheTC dial is 27.8 mm and the original SSD dial is 27.3 mm.

I'm pissed! Now the only hope is to dis-assemble it all over again and then take out all the dial markers and swap them out. No telling what problems that will bring. I can see ending up with a useless SSD unless things work out better than they have so far.

****, shit, piss! :picard:

if the new TC dial is larger then wouldnt it be possible to just shave off 0.25mm of material all around?

Can't you carefully sand that much off? I would think if you take your time test fitting, the outcome might be better than rebuilding the dial with TC parts. Maybe not. I bought the dial for my SSD last month and am sending to Jmb to install soon.
I'll see how he approaches it. I thought someone has already done the swap?

I tried working on an old dial with a Dremel and a grinding stone and after 10 minutes hadn't got very far. Trying to hand sand it would be next to impossible. I could also see a lot of potential for screwing up the dial. At that point I decided swapping out the dial dots might be easier. A half mm is a lot more than it sounds like when you're working on something that fragile.

Time to put it away for the night while I'm getting too frustrated.

Is this the new SSD your talking about or the older V2 Noob version? The Noob dial was great to begin with.

Here is how I do it. I use double sided 3m tape and attach it to the back of the dial. I then attach something to that and spin it on 320 paper. I can do this for you, PM me if you like me to do it for you.

Excellent R!
I had something along those lines in mind.

Ruprekt...yes we have the old SSD's v2, not the new superlumed.
Superlumed doesn't need this :)

Hey R,

Thanks for the offer. Funny thing I was thinking about doing basically the same thing with double sided tape. That idea came to me last night while tossing and turning trying to get to sleep.

I also have a small chuck that I can use in a drill press and with double sided tape and a proper sized drill bit for centering, I ought to be able to spin the dial nicely and just hold a file to the edge.

First try though is going to be swapping out the dial markers since the old Noob dial is in fine shape. I already have the dial markers off the Noob dial so as long as the new ones fit the same holes, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Hard won success at last. I ended up taking the dial down with a file while I rotated it in a small chuck. Fortunately the dial paint and the minute markers are in the same location as the original dial so it did work out. Not for the average DIY'er.

For the last year I've been upgrading the current stable rather than buying new watches. My last new watch was the super rep Pam 288k. That one lasted about 3 months on my wrist and then went back into the box. Even after a full service from 14060 or 10660 (George). It is nice having a chrono that you can actually feel comfortable using the timer function.

For some reason I always come back to a couple of Rolexes. Shame to keep seeing some of those other beauties that never get any wrist time any more.

I understand, I stopped buying new watches awhile back. Last new one was a PO from a year and a half ago. Been upgrading the stable as you say and adding a few vintage projects. I bought a triple six dial last year for my SSD but instead decided to upgrade it, like you. Someday I'll get around to that dial..after I find another SSD or maybe V2 of the new one.
I'm glad your dial swap worked out!

Ok, stupid question, how much better is the TC SSD dial than the old version?

I wonder if he will produce an SD in the future, lets hope so

Guys, lets get one thing straight. The one and only thing tc cares about is the perfect sub, you ain't gunna see a SD from him nor any of the other better than anything here reps he could be selling. He's not in it for the money, all he wants is his grail of the perfect rep sub.

What trailboss said +1.

I still would like to know how the dial compares to gen and/or SLSD as far as print goes and quality. I have a Sub one from him and it is top notch
