ROLEX RED SUBMARINER 1680

I just finished a red Sub 1680 for a member, this was really a big adventure, a challenge and good for the future of the RA's bench mess :)

Listing of the ingredients :

-MBK case set (was really dammaged at the CG and tube area)

-Vintage relumed NDT dial and hands (exeptional quality dial, except the standard factory NDT regular "orange" lume...)

-Gen Rolex cristal

-Gen tube and gen crown

-Faded insert and Yuki pearl

-Gen Rolex 1570 movement modified by myself to fit the MBK case, also repaired and serviced,

The trick to repair heavy scratches without removing metal is the use of the repushing metal technic. This is made using silicon polisher bits and high speed turning engine, the case CG area was really in bad conditions.

The MBK myth :

If it easy to fit a gen cristal, a gen bezel/insert, its a little bit more difficult to fit a gen tube for exemple.

Also I can tell you, by experience, a gen dial -or a gen specs aftermarket dial- and a gen movement don't fit in a MBK case... MBK is far away the absolute verity,
Especially the rehaut/dial housing area which is completely wrong...

With the customer's o.k, I have disassembled the movement -anyway, some parts had to be changed- and I have modified the movement plate and the date disc retainer to allow the movement to enter inside the MBK case.
Btw, the movement was also complete disassembled, cleaned, oiled and reassembled,

After many, many expensive labor hours.... everything works fine,

The 1570 is a very simple and solid construction. Nothing to compare with ETA or Asian movements : gears, pivots, springs and screws are big and thick.
No possible to get stuck, no keyless work risk etc. its simple and logic.
I would say mechanical design and ergonomy of the 1570 are closer to Asian movement than ETA

The dial diameter has been reduced from 2/10mm and the case rehaut internal diameter was 2/10mm enlarged to preserve visual proportions of the dial markers

I have developped a new application of chemical technic for the vintage lume, I can recreate fading tritium effects, with supposed darker matter points to imitate old tritium reactions,

I love that lume. I really like patina effect that you recreated with it. The color and variation of both color and texture is just striking. Outstanding work.

I just noticed the pearl! How did you match the lume in the pearl with the rest of it and still keep the vintage shape to it? Did you work from the back side or something? The whole thing looks great!

Mendota,
Vintage Rolex pearls are hollow and easy to relume. You scrape out the lume and reapply.
