I'm researching a 1016 project as well. This post has been extremely helpful. A couple of questions to the experts:

1) Joshua's Exp I is advertised as 37mm diameter and I assume is the post 1989 rep. Does anyone know if it takes a 27mm or 29mm dial?

2) Is there a decent rep of the 1016 (pre 1989) for under $200 to start a project with?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure that there are any out of the box 1016's that are able to take gen sized dials and crystals. The MBK 1016 can take gen sized 29mm dials, but those are hard to get a hold of, and run over $400. The Trusty time 1016 is one of the better out of the box reps, but it cannot take a gen sized T22 crystal without shaving. The best option is to build a franked out of an old DateJust case, as those take gen dials, crystals, etc...

Thanks for the tip jphendren. I picked up a 34mm 1505 datejust case from vlydog at rwg and then went around some vintage watch shops to do some research. I'm hoping the case will take a 27mm dial.

mir, if you're going to go with a 34mm (1505 is a Date, not a DJ), then you might be better off finding a 5500 Air-King case and building a 5500 Explorer out of it. Dial selection for that size is not great, and genuine dials are even rarer than for 1016s, however.

LHOOQ, yes I am indeed taking the 5500 route and Yuki has some 27mm epx I dial options (though not the ones I originally wanted).

I'm not going for a 1:1 rep, more of an homage as the project is a gift.

This is what I really want to do (courtesy of a local vintage shop) - 1970 Exp 1:

No developments in the 1016 rep world, unfortunately.

But I'm going to bring things full-circle and repost this picture from my last Explorer thread:
