As I sit here rather uncomfortably suffering from yet another gout attack, 3 in the last 6 weeks I thought I'd pick your brains a little as I would imagine that I'm not the only one here who suffers with it

Does anybody have any tips or great ideas for relieving the pain and also anyone know how to avoid it in the first place

Obviously I've googled for info but it's all so contradictory

Thanks guys

Oh and also some sympathy please too

I had it bad! And it's FAR more painful and debilitating than anyone can imagine.
I went vegetarian for 8 months (gout completely gone after 2 weeks) then started working meats back in slowly. Not as much as I used to eat, and no pork, turkey, salmon or shellfish (very high in purines).

Yeah I think that's my issue, as I am a meat-a-holic I just don't know how I'd be able to manage

Has it ever come back since after reintroducing meats ?

I've never had gout but it looks like it could really be painful. My wife is a nutritionist and said to avoid foods with uric acid, whatever that is.

If nothing else, you have my sympathies.

Hi Mike, sorry to read about you Gout.

Maybe an RWI group hug will ease it.

Good luck, Phil

I've never had gout either but my dad suffers regularly. My parents fly to Majorca tomorrow. I called in on them after work today and he's in agony.

He tells me that red meat and alcohol don't help.

All meats contain purines at some level. Purines are what make the uric acid collect in the joints.
Cutting out meats completely will help drop your uric acid levels below the maximum pain-free levels.
After several months of letting your levels drop you can re-introduce meat slowly. Instead of 21 meals a week where I normally ate meat, it's now @ 8-10 meals.
Veg is not bad once you get used to it. Dairy is fine, as are all fruits and veggies.
When back on meats, avoid the ones highest in purines: turkey, pork, salmon, shellfish.
Red meat is actually not bad.
I wish you luck, my friend.

I didn't think this would be my first post here. I'm a pharmacist and there's been some great advice so far. All the items we love to eat increase the likelihood of attacks. Aged meats and cheeses, alcohol, and sugar. Eating plant base proteins such as beans and legumes and less meat and poultry helps. As well as increasing complex carbs, limiting or eliminating sugars and alcohol, and choosing low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Not the answer any guy wants to hear. Sorry. There's always medication!!!

During an attack drink as much water as you can humanly stomach, uric acid is expelled through the urine so the more you can pee the better. Over the counter painkillers can help, if you're only having it in the big toe I'm guessing you're only starting out on the great gout adventure, if you're like me they can continue to other parts of the body, in 2010 I was on crutches as the gout was in my knee..worst pain I've ever experienced, literally could not get out of bed without crutches.

Keep you fluid levels up and as has been said, try to limit the foods high in purines, these include some legumes as well as the meat. I gave up drinking simply because of the pain it was causing me. I also have Lengout on hand if things get too bad. Aaaaahhh...sweet medication...

I have it too. Ive had it for about 4-5 years, at least once I figured out what made my big toes hurt so much. Over time I now get it in my ankles more. It doesnt come often for me, and Im using uloric every day and indomethicin during attacks.

Triggers:
Shellfish, salmon, sometimes pork, rarely beef though. If I eat even a small piece of salmon Im guaranteed to have an attack. Lentils and too many beans can set it off too. Alcohol in combination with those things will trigger it, but alcohol alone wont. Red and blue fruits are supposed to help, and Ive read studies that suggest that coffee may help. I had someone tell me once that if they have an attack they will eat a whole can of cherry pie filling and it would help - I havent done that and probably wont.

Relief/Remedies:
Since its in my feet, I use cold packs for the swelling, and sometimes compress it with an ace bandage. Anti-inflammatories like indomethicin work after a few hours, but they give me the runs something fierce (over-sharing)? It usually takes about 7 days for the attack to fade away for me. Lots of water, as mentioned before.
