Titanium is actually not expensive at all, at least for the lower grades, so their is no economic reason to use some kind of coating (if TI coating is even possible). I've owned Ti reps and they were all solid.
So most of the new 177's are actual ti then?

On a different note, I wasn't really alluding to the fact that there's a ti coating laid over ss, more like a ti-colored coating made of ceramic or mix of coatings.

I've refinished the sides of my 177 H-Factory so I can assure you it's not coated.

But really it's no surprise, people often assume Ti is very expensive because medical and aeronautical grades are indeed expensive, but there are some lower grades that are really affordable.

I do realize how cheap ti is. We get it for intercooler pipes for vehicle projects at $125 a stick. That being said, i know how cheap some of these rep factories are.....

Btw, I'm not trying to argue with you, just having a fun conversation.

I'd actually like to know what kind of ti is being used in rep cases. (TA-1,2,3, 4, etc)

Anything that a customer brings to me. I got my start tuning/building eclipses, and moved to evolutions. I started making Ti upper and lower intercooler pipes for the evolution X when i bought mine new in '09. Since, I've made them for multiple X's, 135i's, 2 tt corvettes, and a grand national, as well as a custom intake for a cts-v. I'm trying to move into exhaust and other components, but it gets really pricy for the amount needed, and it's really hard to find time to do it all. Right now, all I can handle is 1-2 customers a month b/c of my full time job.

(not to completely threadjack)
Don, have you tried a ti-cased watch yet? Gens most of the time use TA-2 ti, which is supposed to be non-allergenic.

Nah, I haven't tried titanium yet. I have had my eye on a Ti Pam for a while. Any other brands have Titanium watches, or reps of them for that matter?

A PVD covered watch might work if its good quality and they have done the back

Most likely the cheapest they can get. :)
That'd be TA-1 then. It's the kind they use in airframes, heat exchangers, etc.

Edit: even if it was grade 5, which has a chemical composition of 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium, 0.25% (maximum), 0.2% (maximum)and the remainder titanium. <- that was from wiki

what about having it DLC coated?

I have the allergy, but not nearly as bad, when my belts get the coating worn down I break out. Not sure about the stainless. Going to be playing with the rotation, gold, tungsten, titanium, silver, and stainless are supposed to be ok for me will be watching closely.

Oh well it sucks. I think I am allergic to nickel too, I can't wear cheap jewelry - rashes will develop. Thank god I have no problems with the usual 316L and 316F stainless steel, I have a watch on my wrist almost 24 hours a day.

I too have a nickel allergy and I used to have to coat my watches with clear nail polish when I was younger. It seems as though none of the reps I've had cause my allergy to flair up, oddly enough.

DLC is with titaniumoxide , but it is such a tin layer, that it wil not help, if he even has it with plastic watches with nickel inside .
