Duke, I think you accidentally posted Richemont group twice.

Watt, you sneaky sneakster, you. Don't open that link in the first post in front of your boss. Just sayin.

In financial terms Swatch is, by far, the biggest player. I can see Richemont taking the vote purely based on the popularity of Panerai on the forum.

I voted for Richemont because I prefer their high-end brands like Vacheron, Jaeger, and Lange. Even Cartier is starting to offer some truly amazing pieces. The prowess that JLC offers in highly complicated movements strengthens the entire Richemont line, and there are innovative movements appearing in all of the Richemont brands, with the possible exception of Baume and Mercier.

While I can see how Swatch dominates the industry in terms of the entry-level and mid-range, its impact at the high-end of the industry seems much more limited. Breguet, Blancpain, Glashutte Original are the highlights of the Swatch group.

My vote is for swatch also....I love the brands that Richemont has, and I think they have a much larger cult following then the swatch brands. Just look at the IWC and Paneristi forums and the huge post counts everyday. Richemont also has predominantly higher end brands with almost all in house movements, but with this type of movement the prices and exclusivity goes up. My point here is that they aren't very well positioned across the watch market.
Swatch on the other hand spans the ENTIRE watch spectrum, with BReguet and Blancpain at the top and Swatch at the bottom. Even their largest volume brand, Omega, is now producing in house movements. By far the better positioned, more powerful company with a great market segment strategy.

Other than Rolex, IWC has the largest global market share of the high end watch sales. That sais something.

I agree with your post, but I voted for Richemont, and the disconnect has to do with how the two of us have chosen to interpret the term stronger suite of brands.

As a watch conglomerate, Swatch is excellently positioned. But, as you alluded to, few of their offerings truly excite me, whereas Richemont has so many watches and brands that I find appealing.

Completely Agree here. ANd truthfully I am far more drawn to the brands like IWC and Panerai, I follow their forums frequently. But the words Strong suite of brands, IMO, refers to the entire collection and their position of strength within the marketplace. Which is undeniably in SWATCH's favor.

I voted Swatch. What Omega is doing is just smart business. But I like long jeans and IWC for what they are too. As far as being strong and viable, Swatch wins.
