Crown Stem Removal

Good day Everyone!

Can i just check if i need to set my watch hands to 12o'clock position before taking off the crown / stem?

And if anyone could share how much pressure should be applied on the stem release mechanism? I kept on screwing up the keyless work & starting to be demoralized on watch modding or should i say movement lifting.

Pls help me. Thks in advance!

More than likely the keyless works is mucked up. This is not uncommon to be able to insert the stem and wind the movement however, time-setting, date setting, etc. don't work if keyless is out of line.

If it's an Eta or a clone you might have to really get serious and take the dial off, the keyless cover off, and then insure that the winding pinion, clutch, etc. are all in the proper position before proceeding any further. That's about the only way to rectify other than sending it to a watchsmith.

Here's a link to another forum (you may have to register) with some good photos of an ETA movement keyless works. Like Cybee says: you may have to get serious and take things apart however, if you're not comfortable with that, find a rep friendly watchsmith. They could fix the issue straight away for a nominal cost.

I recently had the same issue with an ETA rep, did a bit of research and ended up resetting the keyless works. It looks daunting but it was actually pretty straightforward, but as with all these things it can only be achieved with the correct tools.

I'm tempted to do a tutorial on the resetting keyless works on an ETA and 21J and post it here on RWI if anyone would be interested..? It would be in the style of this recent post: http://forum.replica-watch.info/vb/showthread.php?p=933297

Good for you for having a go Fordy!
Sooner or later it will happen again so you may as well learn how to fix it.

The trickiest part for the first timer is not losing any bits. :D

OL... I think that might just be a stellar idea. Not sure if anything exists on the forum but would certainly make a great sticky in the modifications/repair section for future reference.
That is one of the first "watchsmith" attempts I made and glad I learned how to do it! ;)

Righto, I'll set about doing the tutorial on the next watch I strip down.

If anyone in the UK has a watch (non-chronograph) that needs the keyless works reset - let me know, could do the tutorial using your watch and fix it for you at the same time!

Mods - I hope I'm ok to offer this service?! If not, let me know and I'll just do it on the next project I pick up!

looking forward for the tutorials from Ow soon..hehe.. Anw I hope that the ETA movements and Asian 3809 is about the same in terms of the keyless works.

Anyway, the stem on my movement just wont come out no matter how hard i pressed the released button.

And the best thing is...even my local watchsmith is unable to remove it! haha

I'll learn as much as i could here so that i can satisfy myself on removing the stem off..;)

This is how my movement looked like now. Is it a Asian GD3809?

Add me to the list of folks who screwed this up. I've taken stems out of 21j mov'ts before no problemo. Just breezed though a 2836 today...until it came time to put back together and no joy on the setting, etc.

How does one avoid this in removing stems from an ETA?
