My Abyss sometimes stops

My Abyss keeps excellent time but on the rare occasion I see it has stopped working.

When I smack the caseback with my palm, it continues to work.

When I shake the watch, I do hear the rotor quite loudly and maybe some other noises like something is loose.

I have opened it before, but I could not see any loose parts moving around. What could the problem be?

Could be about anything, no way to tell without having the watch in hands.

I also noticed when I regulated the watch, whenever I turned the regulating notch screw, the watch would stop and so I would have to tap it against my hand.

I had a similar issue and couldn't figure it out, it was the second hand getting stuck against the sapphire. Check the clearance!

Sounds like it needs a service. Also, was the time off so bad that you HAD TO regulate it? You may have caused a problem insted of solving one.

I had this problem before I regulated it.
It seems the noise has become worse when I shake the watch, even slightly as it something is loose. What is the best way to tighten the rotor? Just using a screwdriver, or should I use some special tool?

what movement is in it? If it is a 21j, then you can screw around with it, and not worry too much. If you screw it up, you can just buy another one from Ottofrei. If it is a A2824, you might want to get it serviced, as they are harder to come buy, and more expensive. For the rotor, I'd take the back off and spin the rotor buy hand and see if it makes a sound. It could be rubbing against the back while spinning and getting stuck. If that is the case, then try to tighten it with a screw driver. Check the inside of the case back for marks using a loupe. If you see rubbing marks, then there is your problem. Hope that gives you some options. If none of that resolves it, and it is a 21j movement, just buy the movement from Ottofrei for about $25 and have a watch smith do a movement swap. That would be the cheapest way to go. Good luck!

21js that come in our reps often have longer center wheel axis, cannon pinions, ... than the ones you can buy from Ofrei, therefore you'll have a hard time fitting them.

You should be carefull with the advices you give. :)

I have never had a problem fitting a 21j movement from esslinger with rep parts...I'm guessing they are the same brands ofrei sell but all second hand pinions have been plenty long enough in the 4-5 I have replaced

I guess you were lucky. :)

As soon as there was a date overlay I pretty much always had issues.

Wiz,
I've done this 3 times with a 21j DG2813(to be specific), and the hands fit perfectly, and the cannon pinion was exactly the same as the rep. I had heard the ones you get from CousinsUK were too short, but the ones I got from Otto were perfect. Maybe I got lucky with a new batch?
Just make sure you can return it if it doesn't fit, and you should be okay.

I haven't done it in a while because now I don't even take these jobs anymore, but as far as I can remember I've faced the too short pinion/axis issue maybe 4-5 times, either with movements from Cousins or Ofrei.

However last time I tried it was at least a year ago, so they might not be using the same movements anymore.

I don't want to play the old fart here, but telling he he can go on and trsh his movement might be a little strong, just in case he can't find a replacement. :)

Ive opened the caseback again. When I move the rotor, there is a rattling noise and sometimes a slight scraping noise which I believe is due to the rotor touching part of the movement when moving. I want to tighten the rotor but my screwdrivers are too thick to fit in the rotor screw....Any suggestions about this? Thanks. The movement is A2824 btw

sharpen your screw driver OR buy a watchmakers screwdriver kit OR if you are thrifty like myself you can buy an eyeglass repair kit and that screwdriver is usually perfect, if not...sharpen it

Cynikal has good advice, you should sharpen the smallest screw driver you have, or go buy a small screw driver set at a hobby store or jewelry supply store. Or better yet, take it to a watchsmith and have them fix it.

Now that I know it is an A2824, I wouldn't mess with it too much, as a replacement is a lot more expensive if you mess it up, and this kind of movement can be fixed by a watch maker. Good luck!
T.

Wiz,
Sorry about that, I totally understand where you are coming from. It may not be too easy to find a replacement, as you said, if he was to order another DG2813 from Offrei, and it didn't fit, then he will be screwed.

On the flip side, I can't image repairing a DG2813, it would not make financial sense.

Ok gents I should come to the defense of Wiz here on the DG movements.

Wiz is correct about the cannons and such being too short from Otto ect. But this is in reference to the Rolex models or any rep that require a date-wheel overlay.

I think that is what Wiz is referring to, right Wiz? ;)

Oh and best of luck hot. The beauty of the 2824 is that you can slap in a gen movement. :)

Your right, the hands drag/hit markers with the DG2813 from Ofrei with a DWO and the spacer ring on in the subs i tried recently. Though they work great on No Dates
