I was watching a Time-Life commercial Singer and Songwriters and couldn't help wondering which era was the best.

For many, it probably has to do with which era they can best relate to, others it might be where the best memories are. It also got me thinking about what we've lost and what we've gained since those times and was each worth the trouble to begin with....

For the US, the 90/ was a time for great prosperity and technological growth.

Late 60's and early 70's.

Positives: Free love, Hippies, great music, girls not wearing bras, best of the muscle car era, Shelby Cobra, did I mention free love?, permissive society, anti-war demonstrations, introduction to mass use of birth control, free love, Woodstock, Hot Pants.

Negatives: Viet Nam war and Richard Nixon, Altamonte Rock Festival, the draft 1973 Arab oil embargo and the demise of the muscle car through emission controls.

90s but I'm biased...

-Awesome cars....from the E36 BMW M3 to the FD3S Mazda RX7 and Toyota Supra to the 911 Turbo 3.6 to the Diablo, the Corvette ZR1 and the Viper, the Lotus Elise and of course the McLaren F1, it was a great time to be a car guy!
-Awesome basketball...Michael, Magic, Larry, Sir Charles, Grandmama, Zo, Ewing, Mailman, Clyde, Miller, I could go on....the last of the "real" basketball stars. The original Team USA Olympic basketball team...and of course both Chicago Bulls dynasties!
-Great economic expansion (in the US, at least)
-Technology! The Pentium processor, MP3s, CDs, cell phones, and the world meets "the internet". Sony also rolled out the original Playstation!
-Great decade for movies, music, and TV. Everything from Friends to gangsta rap to Mortal Kombat were born.

Man it was a great time to grow up...though I'm sure everyone feels the same way about their chosen decades. Awesome thread though

Woweeezers Boy George and culture club. Frankly I miss vinyl a lot and lately been thinking about getting a turntable just to play my old albums. My older brother bought the Dave Brubeck Time Out record and to this day that is one of my all time favorites..

The very first album I purchased as a kid was Herb Alpert and the TJB Whipped Cream. I grew up playing trumpet so he was my music idol, plus I got a chance to go to A&M studios years ago when Herb and Jerry Moss own it. That was very cool.

My next favorite would be YES and the Fragile album. It's very hard for me to pinpoint one era of music and single out just one genre. But if I have to choose one era and one genre it would be the early 60's and jazz. Give me a smoked filled jazz club late at night with Wes Montgomery playing, and I'll be happy.

Oh wow I forgot the Beatles ohhh this it too hard. OK early to mid 60's final answer although most songs I listened too were not "great hits"

I agree with you there TB. I think I saw just about every tour when they came through town. They had a way of combining classical music with rock and I suppose they were my favorite prog-rock band.

Thanks for posting the album. That intro to Roundabout is classic with Steve Howe at the guitar.

I wouldn't want to stay stucked in a particular era, I'm happy to have the opportunity to see things evolve and change over time.

Nothing touches the warmth of vinyl from a sound quality aspect...If you haven't experienced it, you are missing out. It's actually selling! In fact it is outselling Cd's in hard sales...Most new turntables have usb's now also. Niel Young is working on getting a vinyl quality sound player for digital media.

I'm pretty sure I've got that Herb Alpert Whipped Cream album stored away in the back of a closet with a couple hundred others from the 60's and 70's. I might have to go digging into the pile.

I would love to live in the '80s because my favourite type of music is Rock/Heavy Metal and the '80s was the heavy metal decade. But I was born in 1990, so living through the '90s again as I am now, would be awesome. It's a hard one to choose though.

picked 1990's though, 1950's would've been awesome too.
