Serious Question

I have buit up a good collection of replica's and gens. I have enough to where...... if I sold them all including my prized original WM9's, I would have enough to get a pre owned GEN Rolex Sub. What would you do....sell your collection to get a GEN that you admired or Keep your close enough rep collection and move on with collecting?

I'm at a cross roads....I want a Sub, but some say that my WM9 is so close that the only difference is the movement (and I personally have never opened it and don't have the tools too do so.)

The other side is when you purchase a GEN you fall into another category of class and style, you have something that you can hand down to your children and it grows in value......

Again.....advise is needed and what would you do?

Thanks RWI........

I've done it... But not ALL of them per se. One watch is just not enough... 3 is a livable number.

I will say if you do decide to go that route don't buy just any sub. Do mucho research beforehand if you plan buying pre-owned especially... Some models hold market value better than others and there's a lotta people swapping parts out there. Know that model like the back of your hand... Bracelets, end links and SEL or not, dial and insert variations, fonts, movement, lug holes or no lug holes, box and papers... Everything you can possibly think of.

The gen world is a different animal with many similarities... Especially if you decide to go Rolex vintage. :)

So with regards is it worth it? I personally think it is. The Rolex movement has an especially different "feel" than all the Asian and swiss ETAs I've ever got my grubby hands on. You will notice the difference even if you never open the case back whether its winding, screwing down the crown, sound of the rotor, the feel of the rotor, sound of the ticking... It's just different and in a good way.

Good luck!

Thin your collection. Then decide.

I'm down to three reps with a fourth on the way. (I had 20+ once! 0.o )

The Evergreen State
Gen. A pre-owned Submariner, purchased for a fair market price will hold its value remarkably well.

I sold all my reps but three, and at least one of those will go when I replace it with the gen.

There ain't nothin' like the real thing.

When I put the PO on, it stays there all week. Never had that experience with a rep.

Just my 0$.02 USD.

I've pondered this a few times. But I think i'd really struggle to live with just one watch. I decided that I could live with three as well. My perfect choices would be a 111, a 183 and a 243. Basically a daily beater, a dress watch and a sporty watch. Of course the good thing about Pam's is that changing the strap can make it feel like a new watch!

Replace your reps with a gen? Sure.
Replace all of them? you are kidding yourself, it won't happen, you will buy more reps.
Replace them all with a Rolex Sub? You joke right? The most over rated, over priced (bar a lot of Pams) watch in the world? This is assuming you don't go 1680 or older but then the MVT is getting fragile.

For the price of a sub buy an SMP and a Moonie or a DJ and either of those two or even an SOH.

BTW, those WM9s ARE an investment that will go up in value.

Just be prepared to spend $700 when service is due on that Rolex...I would keep your very best rep or reps and save whatever it takes to get the gen you want.

Can't agree there tho, why 700 bucks? I wouldn't let an RSC near a watch of mine. 14060/16610 or cls next door at RWG can do the service for a fraction of that and both have been working on gen rolex longer than half the guys at the RSC.

Yeah. Service at an independent with a Rolex parts account. I would never pay RSC.. plus they are starting to not service 15XX movements anyways.

Oh I was just trying to discourage him from buying a Sub. Most who walk in to an AD and buy a Rolex will more than likely take it back to the AD and have a RSC service it. They don't know any better.

Even if I did get a Rolex GEN....I would not send it to the RSC....I have learned enough from RWI to know that the watchsmiths on here like Katt or 14060/16610 know more about the watches than the AD's or service centers combined.

Also just because I will sell a few to get the GEN of my dreams doesn't mean I wouldn't be back the same day to buy more......cause who can live with just one watch.....

I like to wear my watches. I work with my hands a lot and the occasional scratch does and will happen often. me, if I had the money I would buy a gen. Wear it for holidays, birthdays and unfortunate funerals. I would never get rid of my reps for a gen. I would sell reps to get reps without a problem. So with saying that, reps are reps, wear them without worry. They can be replaced relatively easy. ( talking about the 150-350 dollar variety) for me I myself find that to be the cut off on spending. If I buy a gen for 2-6 thousand there is no way I'm wearing it everyday. Just my 2 Lincoln's

I think that the best idea is have some gens and several reps.
The sure value are the gens evidently (perhaps Sub WM9 too)
But you will enjoy wearing different good reps

The question is not GEN OR REPS. Because there is a simple reply: GEN AND REPS
They are two different but compatible worlds if you like watches

Save and keep your gens and enjoy your reps.

When I first found this place I had the funds to buy a gen PO. The Planet Ocean was my grail and, to some extent, still is.

I got the rep and spent the remainder on a family holiday.

I've since spent that amount on reps. Regrets? No.

I've got a box and a half full of watches, some of which have been problematic. But you know what......I've enjoyed the ride, met some truly great people (many of whom I now consider friends) and learnt so much along the way.

One day I will own the gen, but certainly not at the expense of my rep collection. Good luck with your decision and God bless RWI.

You do have quite a collection of reps, thats for sure, but to answer your question I would rather have one or two of my favoite gens as compared to a drawer full of reps. For me the gen of a watch I really really want could never be replaced by a rep no matter the number of them.

Your replica collection is very heavily concentrated in highly modded Rolexes, the majority of which are of the Dive watch variety, which suggests to me that deep down, you want a gen Rolex submariner.

I can understand having an extensive collection of replicas that are a very diverse collection of watches, but when most of your replicas are of one general type of watch, then it's probably time for a gen of that watch.

Perhaps you should thin down your replica collection, particularly the gold plated ones (will ultimately wear out if used often), for a start, and then trim out the ones which are very similar, or don't get much wrist time.
