So here's the story of how I was sitting in a cupcake shop in DC and a elderly Indian gentleman handed his Patek phillipe over to me....to try on =) Story to follow. Skip past the words for pics.

So I'm sitting at a cupcake shop waiting for my fiance to meet me there and head to a christmas party. An older couple walk in with two kids definitely grandkids. The older guy sits next to me, right next to me and asks me how I'm doing and starts a great conversation. He asks me about my life and who I am. I work for the DoD so I got a little suspicious but kept my holiday cheer answering him. He was admiring my watch, a rep Pam 111. I asked him if he likes watches and he said he collects watches. He asked if he could try my watch on. Being that he was old and I didn't think he was going to run with my watch I said sure. He said it was really heavy but really nice and that Panerai is making them a lot nicer than they used to. I laughed to myself and then I asked him if he had a panerai. He said "oh no, they're too specific". He knew from talking to me that I'd been in the submarine force in the USN. "th
ey're for deepsea travel and visibility". He gave me my watch back and then he started to take his off without me asking and he handed it over.

A PATEK PHILLIPE!!!! A REAL F-ING PATEK!!!! He just handed it over. I immediately started smiling and he asked me "do you know this brand?" I blew up in a fit of laughter "OF COURSE!!" He had his grandpa and great grandpa his name and his grandsons name engraved on the back of it when he went to pick it up in Geneva.

Here's one last pic of the movement. I gave him back him watch after I thought about the consequences if I actually stole it from him. Turns out the agency doesn't look to highly to stealing $30K watches from the elderly.

The rest of the night was ok =)

Nice story. You just never know who you're gonna run into. Sometimes it can get a little dicey when the rep comes off the wrist, but sounds like he was a gentleman.

Cool story!

The only real Patek I've ever seen in the wild belonged to an Amway distributor I met a couple of years ago in Sydney. I was admiring a Maserati (owned by Mitch, another Distributor) and when I saw this gentleman watching me casually we chatted about what an amazing vehicle it was. He invited me to sit and he'd introduce me to the owner which is when we started chatting about watches.... They were 2 of the nicest men I have had the pleasure of chatting with, and yes I know the stigma, and yes I agreed to chat more with them about business.

People talk a lot of smack about things they don't understand. I still keep in touch with one of them and have come to call him a good friend. It's too bad some people represent their organization in such a shitty manner - these 2 were consummate gentleman who appreciated the spoils of hard work (and often, ridicule). I admire them both greatly.

Beautiful watch!!!!

Great story behind a fabulous watch. You were very lucky to find such a gentleman who willingly handed over to you an expensive watch without asking. Great experience!

Warren,

Great story and amazing piece of horological history you had a chance to hold in your hand :)

Were you at Georgetown Cupcakes from the TLC show DC Cupcakes?

No I was at a place called frostings. Being that I was the past pastry chef of Vidalia and 1789 I can't appreciate the dry, crunchy buttercreamed abominations that Georgetown cupcakes produces. My own opinion of course.

Kinda made me feel like a million bucks. I found out that he owns an indian restaurant group in the DMV. Merry Christmas RWI.

Wonderful watch, and cool story. I hope to eventually get that watch, or the perpetual calendar version, the Patek 5140.
