Sea-Dweller vs. Planet Ocean
I have loved these two beauties for a while and seem to keep debating on which to wear. There are a few comparisons between these in the "Gen World", so I wanted to do a Franken one in the "Rep World" for the lovely members of RWI
Let's start with the Rolex Sea-Dweller. It started out as a Noob version from the famous TimeShop Promo. It has:
Gen Dial
Gen Crown
Clarks Hands
WM Pearl/Insert (sanded)
Generic Insert
Jackjo case mod & bracelet (shaved)
Pbdad case mod (shaved and polished)
fine_dd re-lume
Katt assembly
Second, is the Omega Planet Ocean. I picked it up as a broken 4th Generation in member sales. It had orange numbers and the lume dots were falling off. It has:
Gen dial
Gen hands
Gen crown/tube (by R2D4)
Gen crystal
Gen pearl (by R2D4)
ETA date wheel
Gen bracelet
Katt assembly
Dial, Crystal, Hands, Date Wheel comparison:
Both dials are fantastic and are easily readable. The date can be made out a tad better with the PO because of the white on black background and the SD's curved edge tends to reflect light which makes it hard to focus. The hands on the PO seem to stand out more. Especially the minute hand. The lume reaches out pretty close to the dial edge/minute markers. The crystal on the PO, having awesome AR blows the SD out of the water.
Pearl
Both are easy to spot and use on the bezel. So it's a toss up.
Bezel
The bezel on the SD is a bit easier to gab onto and a bit looser. That is good in terms of setting it. But it can also make it possible to knock out of position if you bump against something. The PO is pretty firm to turn and feels closer to Gen. They have both been removed and installed by R2D4 and work perfectly.
Crown & HEV
Having Gen Crowns and tubes makes a big difference. The feel when threading them together is very precise and smooth. Well worth the money. The HEV's are both sealed. I did have them checked for water tightness beforehand and both passed to 3 BAR's.
Case Back
The PO's is pretty cool. So much detail and is nice to look at. Th SD's is pretty bland. It's paint has rubbed off too.
Bracelet
Both work pretty well and stay secured. The SD's clasp is very sharp and impossible to file/buff smooth. I had some issues with the link screws when adjusting the size. One of them snapped at the threads. The PO's Gen bracelet is very comfortable and was easy to size.
Lume
fine_dd did an amazing job re-luming the SD's old tritium markers. It was "hardcore". The mixture he used was very true to Gen. The PO wins in this catagory. Not just because it has Gen lume, but because it has more surface area of lume. If the SD had bigger markers it could keep up.
Wrist Shot
Conclusion
The PO stands out in most of the categories and in my opinion wins in this comparison . It is the everything watch.
I had fun writing this and thanks for viewing!
