hello to all! :) does anyone know of a reputable dealer based in london? strangest thing, but a few weeks ago i did something i never thought i would and on impulse bought a Chopard rep from a guy at a market. he was selling watches and then showed me, from under the table, a bunch of reps he had. i know it goes against all advice, but i liked the look of this one and bought it. AND i have to say, it seems great. keeps good time, and seems solid and well desgined. i may be speaking too soon of course!
but i wondered if anyone else had had a similar experience and if someone might be recommended?

Anyway, my question is what's the rule on telling friends, family or even strangers that you're wearing a rep? I understand that there isn't really a rule per se but I was wondering about general practice amongst forum members... What do you guys generally do?

I think that it depends on whom you're trying to impress.

I'll tell you that as a woman, I might feel admiration for a man who can afford to wear a gen, but I would feel much, much more admiration for a man who can afford to wear a gen, but would choose to spend his money on something other than prestige.

So by all means, I *prefer* rep wearers. :)

My family and some friends know I wear reps, even got two for my eldest son as he was so impressed.

Two weeks ago my wife and I were in an electrical store looking at 3D TV's. It's summer and I had a short sleeve shirt on wearing my orange PO. The sales man came over and said "Hey, nice Omega sir". No-one's ever done this before so after the initial Hyper-ventilating not knowing how to reply I said "Thanks buddy, we gotta go check out he Lap-tops" grabbed my wife by the arm and briskly walked to the Lap-top area.

Have to figure out a reply in case it happens again. :)

Good luck, Phil

I'm sure most of the time people will assume, but not tell you anything.

I am proud to say that I was first to make that same statement! :)

And she's not just a woman, she's a very impressive and attractive woman by all standards. And, more importantly, a good friend and ally to many here.

I've been on here for a year and half and seen a million what if I get called out threads and have thought alot about how to respond and still when I glance a watch I never assume it's a rep so I think a normal civilian will not think it's a rep as long as you and the watch look like a fit.

Remember the 99.9% rule. That's in a rep collector's favor. I personally have never been called out, and when I am complimented on my watch, I just say "Thanks" and move on ......

Hey PhilG, IMO a simple "Thanks" will do... There is no need for a prepared response. With the gray market watches, one could EASILY afford a GEN PO without question; plus the Omega REPS are so accurate, virtually no one can tell the difference from an arms length, probably not even if you removed it and allowed him to hold it - no big deal.

My response to the question - I always to stick to watches that I can easily afford in GEN if I chose to do so; I have been around for a while and I look the part, so I never have a problem.

You're right my friend, just need to accept a compliment. Might return to the store tomorrow. Mmmmm let's see, Timex or Omega?:)

Good luck, Phil

I understand the idea of feeling more admiration for a person who chooses to spend his money on something besides prestige, but I don't really think that a person who is buying a replica is really doing that. Let's be perfectly honest, we buy replicas for the perceived prestige, but at a significantly discounted price.

Indeed, if you remove the premium associated with the watch brand on your replica, and any added value due to it being easily mistaken for a watch that is 100x more expensive, then there are many reasonably priced gens under $500 that are a much better value for money. They still have the Swiss automatic movements, detailed dials, much better water resistance, and QC, as well as a real warranty.

Take for example, the Tissot Le Locle, which is in my opinion, one of the better valued affordable Swiss mechanical dress watches.

As much as we bemoan the money pumped into marketing by the big watch companies, this is what makes these watches desirable to the general public, and by extension, us.

If you said that you much preferred a person who could afford a Patek, but chooses to wear a Hamilton instead, then I would agree with your reasoning.

To put it another way, I think it is fair to say that buying a replica is perhaps more fiscally prudent than buying a ultra expensive gen, but it does reflect the fact that we value prestige, perhaps even more so than a person who buys an equally prudent affordable gen, but which is far more reliable, and modulo the issues of branding, might be objectively said to be a better watch.

If you're not convinced that replica dealers are aware that we place a premium on prestige, just look at the cost of homage watches, which are essentially the same as our replicas, but without the brand, and the prestige markup.

I think a lot of people try to pretend this whole hobby is something else.

Part of it is enjoying watches, but the main part is what brings us all here.. We want to look rich at a fraction on the price.

Yeah, my brother tends to buy pricier watches and I told him I ordered it and that it's a rep... He now wants to wait and see what the quality of my PO I purchased from Silix is like before he makes an order :p Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Not to be rude, but if he often purchases nicer watches he obviously is interested in nicer time pieces, and if the po you mention is silixs 29.99 special I don't think he will be too impressed, and he should consider purchasing a nicer replica, with far better build and quality. Silixs po is awesome for the price tho !!!
