OK, I'm going to start at the end: with the finished product. I love the Big Egi, but 60mm on my wrist is just plain silly. DSN has one that is 55mm, which, though better, is still pretty silly for me. Then someone here recommended that Timeshops has a 47mm version and, as an extra bonus, it was only $128. Armed with it, a bunch of new chemicals, some bits and bobs, a great deal of patience, perseverence, many set-backs, I ended up with this:

egi1.jpg

I'll write up a few words and post pictures of the process. Overall I'm very happy with the result, except that the dial I left when I went to bed last night, looks very different than it does today--and not for the better. I guess I didn't rinse it enough or something. There were even tiny droplets of moisutre on the dial and hands this morning--which you can see in the photo--and look at that blob of lume on the # 9 that appeared overnight, as if by magic! Anyone have any idea what that's all about....?

Oh yeah, I should have posted a picture of the watch before I began to destroy it:

I wanted something that looked like it 'went down with the ship', and also reflected a bit of Steam Punk aesthetic--which I very much like. It was never my intention to create something 'real', or a facsimile of a genuine Panerai. This is purely fun. The dial I used was an old sterile DSN I had around because it was the only one I could find made of brass--which I needed for the patina with the chemicals. I had originally intended to keep the second hand, but broke the pinion taking the hand off. !@#$%!!!! Thus the decision was easy! I actually prefer the simpler look, and since I was planning to clutter it up with stuff, I'm just as glad not to have the second hand. On a previous B&R build I'd made a 'riveted' patch and really liked that look. This time I intended to modify that a bit. Here I'm cutting out the thin sheet brass after creating the 'rivets' and cutting out the hole. The nail is the one I used to mark the rivets. I flattened the end slightly and made sure to sand the edges of the nail so it was round.

egi10.jpg

I intended to experiment with the dial, sanding most but not all of the old paint off it, then letting the chemicals attack the raw metal, leaving the rest. Didn't work. Made a mess. Thus I sanded the whole thing down, cleaned it with acetone, and immersed it in a chemical bath designed to patinate brass and copper:

egi11.jpg

It took several tries to get the patina I liked. As you can see, I also scored a vertical line across the dial face and added 'rivets' to one side. I burnished the lefthand side of the dial, and left the right untouched after the chemical bath. The hands were done too. The lume was placed on the back dial and the top dial then pressed into it--which made a reasonable facimili of a sausage dial. Why the little red mark? Dunno. Just thought it would look cool in a sort of military way. I really like this 'look' and went to bed a happy camper last night.

egi6.jpg

This is how it looked this morning:

egi3.jpg

The burnishing was gone, and the whole thing was far more brown than it was last night. More alarming, there were tiny dropplets of moisture on the dial. I gave the whole thing another rinse and realized that I had a choice: redo and try to recorver what I had yesterday, or carry on. I decided on the latter. If I don't like it in a few days, well, I'll redo.

Then it was time to tackle the case. I used a stainless 'ager' I bought, and it worked a treat. Paint it on and stainless goes black, then with a buffing wheel on my Dremel, I buffed off the worst of the aging, leaving the case looking as if it had been through the wars. I also softened the edges of the little tabs that stick out of the rotating bezel, and added a few scratches here and there. The danger, it seems to me, is that overdoing it is so easy......

egi2.jpg

And then it was put the whole thing together and add the Savage strap I had for a different watch. I should say that the strap that came from Timeshops was the very worst rep. strap I've come across--but I am not complaining. You get what you pay for.

egi1.jpg

....and another:

egi4.jpg

And that's it. I must again apologize for the photos. The ones taken through the watch crystal are 'orrible because I just don't know how to eliminate the glare. Those of you who post beautiful pictures..... I hang my head in shame

Oh yes, I forgot..... the pearl the original came with is truly 'orrible and I want to make another. I know people have made them. From what? It almost looks as if a blob of epoxy, properly positioned might do the trick, but I'd be grateful to hear from you experts.

It was Five of Clubs, here on the 'vintage' sub-forum, who imspired me with this whole 'vintage' bug. Here's a pic of the B&R I built as a result of seeing his work (Peter Gunny made the strap to my specs and I couldn't be happier with it). The present project is simply taking some of those ideas and running with them:

Thanks very much for the vote of confidence, but I fear it is misplaced. I was sittin' around and suddenly realized there was moisture on the inside of the crystal, and that the dial was again beaded with droplets, as were the hands. What the 'ell is this all about? It must be something to do with a) the chemicals I put on the dial, or b) moisture from the lume which is still a bit soft, or c) both. !@#$%^&!!!!!! Anyway, it is now all apart again..... Sigh.....

Simply put - I love the new build! The case and dial especially are terrific. Would you please share the name of the agent used to age the stainless?

As a suggestion, you may want to give the dial a little rotation clockwise. :)

Well done again!

Thanks for your kind words. As a steam-punker, I thought you might like it.

The stainless stuff is called 'Insta-Blak SS-370 manufactured and sold by a company out of Wiscinsin called EPI. They have an extensive web site at www.epi.com I bought a small bottle of it (which will last me a lifetime), plus one for verdigris (greeny-bluey) and one for the brown patina--the one I used on this build. Each bottle cost me $10 with free shipping in the States. Works for me. I just hop across the border from here in British Columbia and pick it up. The company was excellent to deal with.

Funny you should pick up on the dial needing a slight turn. It's actually the bezel that is off. How to change that stumps me since it is based on those 'clicks'. I'd still like to know if there is an easy way to remove the bezels.

Good news. I expected to see a pile of mush this morning, but the dial appears to have settled down and is the same as last night--and without any moisture on it. Last evening I was able to do a bit of very gentle burnishing on the left-hand side of the dial because I am keen to have a subtle difference between the two sides, based upon the 'riveted' vertical seam. I'll get it back together and post the latest pictures..... Here's this mornings dial:

OK, back together and ticking away. I'm pretty happy with the build. I realize that the watch cries out for a solid AR coating because the reflections are ferocious and really do detract from the dial. Any recommendations for someone to do AR?

and a last one..... (at least until I have to take it apart again ;)

Absolutely stunning! I'm a huge Egi Fan. I have5 right now and another 9 Egi builds in the works, may have to add a steampunk into the mix.
