Wearing a rep amongst friends and colleagues

Always tell the truth. If they are your friends they are going to find out anyways, why come off as a poser?

Also, if you have a reputation from being truthful about the fakes, when you wear a Gen and tell them it is a gen, they are likely to believe.

Just say you got it off a dead guy by the train tracks.

The dssd is not a cheap gen by any means....

I wouldn't lie about it if asked.

Out here that would be a decomposed body in the desert (with a bale of green leafy stuff still strapped to his back).

Whenever someone asks the question of whether he should lie about his reps, the question he should ask himself is, "How good a liar am I?" Be honest with yourself! If it only takes a couple of follow-up questions for you to go all "Tell-Tale Heart", you might want to stick to the truth.

I always say its gen. Even a WIS can't tell a decent rep on the wrist. Much less your colleagues. Its none of their business if you can afford it or not. They dont know how much you have in you account, and if they do they dont know if you got it as a gift etc.

If youwanted to say its real. May sure you got yr story ready. Make sure it's not story about buying from AD from India will do. Usually, I just say I bought it at discount from friends.

:D

"I found it in the forest."

I'm proud of you!

Have you read the "spotted" topic?

Even people here, who are more knowledgeable about watches and specifically reps than most AD in the world, I'd even say, the most knowledgeable bunch in the world when it comes to reps, have to rely on things like "the guys was middle aged and the corporate type, so I assume gen" or "He knew a lot about watches and was in his mid twenties so I assume rep"...

So if you have 1 or 2 gens, make enough money that you could decently spend some on nice watches and own reps of "not too expansive watches" (and avoid buying or at least showing one new every week ;) ), you're OK even with close colleagues and friends and even if these are into watches (as long as they don't own the gen of your rep, and sometimes even if they do).

They will assume gen and won't even ask you the question. They all think all my watches are gen, and I stopped fighting a loosing battle after a colleague just wouldn't believe my noobmariner was not a gen...

I hate being asked this question. I've had it happen many times with my Wm9 sub.
Sometime I say yes, other time I say it's fake. Depends on my mood and the person.
I had one neighbour who was over for beers tell me it was fake, the explain why it was fake. He explained some weird hightec movement that Rolex uses that was not in my watch???? Also Rolex watches don't have "old man magnifiers on them".
Stuff like that.
I also had a friend who was also a Range Rover salesman that couldn't believe it was fake, and even said he didn't think there was such a thing as a fake Rolex Submariner! He knew a lot about different watches because it was one of the things they look for when you walk into a dealer to buy an expensive vehicle. He can spot a Panerai from a mile away.

I always say it's a replica when asked. Most of the time people are intrigued to no end at that point. Unfortunately, a lot of people think reps are all 25 to 30 bux canal street junk, and that's when it gets a bit complicated. I've had a few words with watch snobs from time to time, but for the most part, people love the idea, and want to know more. I am happy to educate at that point.

Come on now. If everyone were to buy a rep then it would make the brand much less valuable and we'd have to go buy a super duper awesome possem Patek Phillippe!

Buy what you could actually afford and nobody will ever ask. Also, if you have a reputation of being highly knowledgeable about watches and always volunteer to help others in their purchases, nobody would dare call you out. Also, considering the time I've spent on this forum and how rare and awkward this hypothetical situation would be, even I would be uncomfortable judging a replica... but because of my career, lifestyle, and confidence, and the fact that so many people know I have bought and sold and collected watches for a decade, I have no problem wearing a 6538 as a gen...

If someone REALLY got down and dirty, I would say, "Look man... since you know Rolex, you know that this watch would cost anywhere from $25K - $75K in this condition, but check this out... this thing was built for me by a guy in Nicaragua from service and replacement parts that he sourced over 6 months... it actually has a modern movement in it, too... it is SO much cheaper to go this route, and I am so impressed by the idea that I am going to start sourcing the parts and building them myself..."

If someone told me that, I would be SERIOUSLY impressed and probably be like, "So wait, how can I get a watch like that built for me?"

The modern watches, nobody would ever ask, but if they pressed me I would probably say, "Look man, I got sick of blowing so much cash on watches and I found out that there are crazy people out there that build these dead-on replicas... SOOOO much cheaper and you can even get them with the same damn movement. It will still cost you around, I dunno $500 or so..."

It's true... I remember when I finally learned how pointless it was to buy a gen when I bought a U-boat Flightdeck 55mm... the movement was a straight-up 7750.... with a rep quality engraving... MIGHT AS WELL BE A REP, SAME DAMN MOVEMENT!!!! So I have no problem with the "is it real" question because these days, the line is so blurred on quality and movements and the used market is so saturated with replicas and service parts that I guarantee there are tons of people that are wearing a Rolex with a gen movement and case and that's it and paid full used price for it, or wearing one of the countless 7750 variant gens that is actually (unbeknownst to them) a replica and they are happy as a lark.

And I will tell you another thing, the amount of belief that people have in your watch (in my experience) is inversely proportional to "how hard you try." I often go to Publix dressed almost like The Dude and look like a complete mess, but wear a PAM or my 6538... but I act incredibly astute and polite to everyone. I have also been stopped in the parking lot looking like a mess with a "Nice watch, what is it?" and say "It is a 1959 Rolex Submariner..." and have been given the "C'mon, really?" stare, and respond, "Well actually the case is from a 5508 but the rest of it is from a 6538... if this thing were all original it would be $70K! It was pieced together from parts..."

The key, I think, to any kind of material possession is the mindset of "this is for me, not for you," and that is how it should be because 99% people don't know/don't care.

And even when I was a wage-slave, I had a gen Breitling and two gen Tag Heuers, so it is completely legit to have a nice watch if you saved up and got one... I know a lot of kids who received them as high school or college graduation gifts.

Sorry about the rant.

I advise dont tell yr friends or colleague its a rep. Their impression of you will change. Some of yr very righteous friend will think you are part of the criminal syndicate. Even though you may just buy a rep for cosmetic appeal. Once you have a rep watch, they will think every part of yr clothes, accessories are rep. Even yr car is rep, house is rep. They do not want to be friend with you. Thinking you are some kind of criminal. Business friend also dare not venture into any deal with you, thinking you may take shortcut and scam them since you buy rep.

My advise, if you want to get a rep. Get a good one with at lease 95% close to gen so that you will not be easily call out. Spending a few hundred dollars is worth it. You get quality ,accuracy and durability. And its only 1/10 or 1/20 of the price compare to gen.

Always insist yr watch is gen unless you are unlucky to met a RWG/RWI expert member but I think they will not expose you intentionally since you are all in the same boat... Probably he will bring you to one corner and say ' Hey, I'm a RWI member and I know yr watch is rep!'... Haha...

This is true, I remember a guy at my school wore canal street Rollies and people were just like "get real man." So it seems that a lot of people don't really respect rep collecting as a hobby and like to think of it as a "fake, wannabe" type activity :(

Personally I think people won't call you out if you have a high paying job, come from a wealthy family, etc. But slap a gen on an average kid and people will start to question.

Yes Many people don't really know the deal about reps..
My story is that a friend of mine who used to wear a really crap sub, was called out by others but they never have told him something..He was telling stories about it but man his was a really bad one...
But from my point of view i can say that very few people have examined my watch..Some days before i gave my brother my rolex to wear and see how it looks like in public..I can assure you that i really know the characteristics and tells of my watch..I couldn't say if it was a real or rep...You know what i mean..If you are wearing a really good rep watch noone can understand from so far...It must be examined from someone who really has great knowledge...
