Do all of you have automatic watch winders at home?

Just my two cents ... Other than convenience, I have never been convinced that they offer any real benefit and that they may actually shorten rather than lengthen the life of your watch. A watch is not meant to run continuously, other than normal daily wear on your wrist. I know there is a lot of discussion about protecting against oil coagulating. However, in 25 years dealing with automatics without a winder this has never been an issue. As long as you keep your watch in a stable place the oil should remain evenly distributed as it was when your watch stops. That being said you should still make an effort to wind your watch every month so.

Once again this is just my experience and YMMV.

never needed one... i have to say though, if your watch breaks because it's been sitting for so long why do you still own it?

No watch winder for me as of yet. A single might come in handy, but the idea of keeping 10-20 watches on a leather padded tilt-a-whirl seems like overkill.

I have a two watch winder from Brookstone. For me, the three year warranty was worth the cost.

At any time, I have one on my wrist, two on the winder, and four other autos in a watch box. I rotate them through the winder once a week just so oils don't migrate away from the friction points.

As far as the oil migration from sitting, that's been debated, but it makes sense to me (just like keeping the mainspring fully wound all the time isn't good).

No winders, just a watch box. Most get worn in rotation so I see no harm in leaving them dormant for a few weeks a time tbh. More use means more wear on gears etc as far as I see it.

Doesn't really matter, have them serviced every 5 years or so and you'll be fine whether they are on a winder or in a box.

Avoid that seller at all cost: crazy expensive prices, takes forever to ship, and basically no after sale service.

Jeah I just like that brand, not the site never dealed with them

I did :) Big mistake. The guy also have a French version of his website, and the French watch forums are full of stories of pissed off customers.

I'm about to order an 8-watch winder. It's not so much that I'm worried about the oil drying or the movement, I just think it's a pain in the ass to set the date every time I wear the watch, and I worry about the wear and tear on the crown by screwing/unscrewing all the time.

Woahwhhh... you really are taking care of your watches...
Some of mine do "lay dormant" for sometimes 1 or 2 years...

And they get servicing (mostly the gens) when they start showing problems, like keeping unreliable time (that's very very rare... )

I've had winders for many years - I keep my mist frequently worn 16 watches on winders all the time.
But even on a winder if you don't wear an auto watch for a few weeks or longer, you will still have to adjust the time and occasionally the date.
No auto/mechanical watch keeps perfect time.

Good point Dragonscape... for the amount you pay for the winders is like another rep or two.
The real question is:
How many watches does a good winder cost

But from what I've learned. Since my friend who was buying a gen asked me regarding watch winders is this.

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f423/winder-necessary-longer-life-watch-435670.html

Cliff notes: Oils distribute through capillary action. Winder not needed to distribute oils. A ticking movement is a movement that wears mechanically. Even watches that are not used should be cleaned and lubricated periodically, because oils will dry out anyway. Winder does not prevent drying out. Crown and stem are much sturdier than the miniscule parts in the movement. Thus crown/stem wear is less than movement wear if you are careful."

Watch winders have thus as good as no effect on the life of a watch. Actually if you leave a watch for a year on a winder it will be subject to more wear than had you just left it in the closet. After five to eight years you will still have to clean and lubricate it. Winder or not.

Winder is great for time saving, accuracy, convenience. All valuable assets. But it's not a maintenance requirement or help.

---------------------------

So if you have an uber complicated movement then obviously a watch winder is definitely something to look into. Also if you want to keep the accuracy of the watch consistent then this might be a good idea for you.

This is really the exact reason why I haven't got a winder yet. I would end up setting them anyways. I only have two watches that are +/- 4 seconds a day and to get that I have to lay them crown side down at night.

I haven't gotten into watch-winders as of yet. I don't mind letting them sit in the watch case and sleep for awhile. I find that I rotate my watches more often by wanting to bring them back to life. Like waking up an old friend. If I had them all turning constantly I would never get around to wearing some of them. I usually wear a different watch every 3-5 days for this reason. It keeps me from getting tired of any one watch and keeps the hobby interesting for me. My 2 cents!

I rotate mine the same way, but usually make the decision at 5:30 am before I go to work. I like just picking the watch off the winder and putting it on not worrying about if it's set . I usually reset the time and , if necessary, the date on the weekend. My excuse for fondling each one once a week.

Also expect an Acetimer 8 watch winder at my door when I get home today. That gives me a total of 14 winder positions. :biglaugh:

Im currently going through some major renovations at home so im taking the opportunity to have 24 boxy winders installed in a recessed section of my walk in closet.:biglaugh: For the money i dont think you can get anything better than a boxy winder.

Awesome!
