So one of my close friends for years is a sales rep for a company called "diamonds international" She has been doing this job for about 10 years and we always talk watches. Although I never let her know I own reps. She has seen many of my reps on the wrist and has held a few of my PAMs and my Santos and always complements them, she has never questioned them. Anyway I mentioned I liked the new ceramic sub and was thinking of getting one (rep of course). She said "Never buy Rolex, they now use a lower grade SS and the movement is crap! They keep horrible time and never hold their value!" She said they use low quality ETA movements. I explained to her that with the exception of the pre 2000 daytona, all their movements have been in house.
I explained to her that to my knowledge Rolex has and still does always uses 904L grade steel. Which is the highest quality. Is it true that Rolex has been using lower grade steel now? (ive got $100 on this question LOL)

Nope, Rolex use 904 for everything AFIK.
DI sell watches? I thought they were gems only?

I'm pretty sure out of all of the brands (maybe aside from Patek) Rolex are the best at holding their price, due to demand, quality and Rolex's manipulation of the market.

The $100.00 is yours.....

I'll make it short .... in house movements, 904L steel, they make their own gold (both yellow and rose with a touch of platinum to give it Rolex's unique bright color), and all the diamonds and gems are of the highest quality. All timepieces are COSC certified ... Nothing "crap" about Rolex, IMHO...

Sounds exactly like the crap that sales people spew when when they don't carry a line or have switched allegiances. Oh yeah, we used to sell abc, and in the past they were really terrific, but when they (changed hands), (started using cheaper materials), (moved their factory to...), (some other BS), we stopped carrying them or we no longer recommend them. In many cases the "kill rap" is institutionalized, so that no matter who you talk to in the store, to you get the exact same story. It happens in all kinds of consumer products. The reverse is also true, like the "it takes a year to make a Rolex," "each Rolex is made by hand from a solid block of unobtanium."

Her argument would be better served if she simply said they were overpriced. They use the finest materials available for all intents and purposes. Steel is an alloy; its combination of metals is a recipe that continues to be improved upon. To say that Rolex has transgressed to inferior steel and uses low grade ETA movements is a little weird.

That saddens me... DI does not even carry Rolex, at least not one that I have ever visited. There top watch, on a good day is Movado. I'm not sure that a DI salesperson would be certified to make that conclusion. Maybe she had one in her personal stash and something went haywire with it or something.

I do agree that Rolex is "now" over priced, but they aslo use quality and fine material - nearly any Rolex AD could easily confirm that information.

Not only do they make their own movements, they make their own parts for the movements (many companies outsource parts and in-house assemble), down to the parachrom hairspring. They state 904L as their steel of choice.

'Sounds like a sour grapes issue to me.

No offense Saw, but she sounds like an :asshat:

well they prob teach them wrong info in order for them to bash brands they don't carry.
I also told her I was sending my Omega to my watchsmith service. She said "you have to take it to and AD because only they really know how to service t properly to their standards. I told her it had a standard ETA movement and any watchsmith worth his salt would have no problem servicing it, but she kept insisting that it was a bad idea. Just brainwashed.

Oh she also said that only the submariner passed COSC standards

She is seriously compromising her reputation spewing nonsence like that. "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial means COSC .... It's on the YM, DJ, DSSD, Sub, DD, Milgauss, GMT, Explorer and Prince dial, paperwork, etc ...
