i believe on the GV the green effect is down to a green ring .
i think it does have AR but the genuine GV has a green crystal which i don't will or can be rep'd

Awesome, thanks Bonesy. I look forward to a thorough review. I'll definitely hold off until then. If the effect is moderately decent then I'm gonna get one. It does seem unlikely that it's actually green crystal, but even if it's just AR but well implemented (AHX is pretty negative on it), since it'd be in light rotation for me then I'm not too concerned.

Can anyone that's had one scratched post pictures? That'd be really helpful too.

I believe the older reps employed the 'green ring' as a way of getting a colour to the bezeled edge of the crystal. The newer ones seem to employ a green ring under the crystal and green AR as well. But we'll all find out in about a week when I get home from this work trip and my package from Lay should hopefully have arrived.

Someone kindly show me a picture and a link to a super rep Explorer 1...just not seeing it...its not just a case of aesthetics, but rather of funcionality...the watch must work, keep proper time and be rugged, water proof to 200 meters...in short, its a tool watch and should function as such.

Well any of the Explorer 1 reps on the websites are as close as you are going to get. If you looking for all those things you need to buy a gen diver watch. You can't expect a rep to work exactly as a then gen man.

The GV will probably never be close to gen, the white needs waay better lume from factory and needs to be brighter orange. Also I could be wrong but I think rep lume is blue, gen lume is green.

this is true for some, but puretime finally has a white dial with all green lume - inching forward with accuracy.

My thought was if O&W can make an Explorer clone with their logo that has those features, and retail it here for about 430 bucks it would seem to me that a quality replica would have the same qualities at a similar price.

There is a HUGE difference between an homage company like O&W, or even Invicta for that matter, and a rep factory.
The former have skilled horologists, and technicians on staff, who are paid for their skill, and the quality of the pieces they put out. The latter have low waged unskilled labor (for the most part) that are told merely "put the movement in, put the bezel in, press the crystal, install the strap, and ship it out." that are paid for how many watches they can get shipped out.
The current paradigm is working for them, and they won't be changing it any time soon, unless rep buyers as a whole boycott the products, until certain criteria are met. But that will NEVER happen. Those of us that are knowledgeable and informed are few and far between. The mass of rep buyers probably have no idea there is a collective like us around, so there will ALWAYS be a customer for the rep factories to sell to, even if we banded together and insisted on better QC, water resistance, ect.

Rep factories are NOT horologists, they are aesthetic replicators, and assemblers.
Most probably don't even have the quality of equipment that it takes to produce components with tight enough tolerances to consistently reproduce high depth rated divers.

I think people here would be surprised if they saw who is assembling these watches. This isn't a US Manufacturing plant we are talking about here.

For the price point, the nature of the business and the illegality of the products it's pretty much to be expected.

If you want a sub/gmt/DSSD clone you can go to someone like Steinhart for a very very similar looking watch, that WILL have the QC and WR that you are looking for.

I would say most of the BK ones, in particular, the BK classic submariner and the BK WM9 YM
