I'm having timing issues with my new watch

I bought the promo Rolex Submariner from TimesShops.net with 21j movt. The price was unbelievable, $45.

When I place the watch on my winder it loses anywhere from 5 min. to 30 min. a day. I already adjusted the timing since it was on average 5 min. slow a day. I reset the time a couple times and sometimes the seconds hand would continue but the minutes hand wouldn't. For the most part when I wear the watch time is correct. I plan on leaving the watch lie on its case back and see how it affects timing.

My question: I paid a low price for the 21j movt watch, am I expecting too much from it?

I know a lot of people think 21j movt's aren't worth it but I have owned several and they all have kept their timing better than anything I own, including gens. I don't mind adjusting the time whether the watch is running fast or slow. That is just part and parcel of automatics. I do expect a watch to run for at least awhile before dieing. I think the 21j movts are the best value out of the box and many have been known to run unserviced for years. I WONDER IF I JUST HAVE A STINKER OF A MOVT, WHICH I KNOW CAN HAPPEN. I understand if the ETA's or ETA copies die due to being in some form of dry and not properly lubricated. I have a 1665 with a slow beat ETA that dies when I place it on my winder. Probably due to needing a service. I bought the 1665 to keep long term and knew I would be sending her out for servicing after i bought her.

I don't think it is worth sending back to the dealer considering the price I paid and cost expected to ship back and time involved. I guess I should just leave it off my winder and manually set the time when i wear the watch. If problems persist use the watch for parts, practice modding it for experience or swap the movt.

Do new 21j movts bought from Ofrei.com come properly lubed? Or do they ship in "dirty" condition?

I don't think expecting your replica wactch to tell the correct time through-out the day is to much to ask, IMO....

ya 5-30 minutes a day is not acceptable. send it back or get it fixed, whichever is easier and more convenient.

What movt is it? If it is an ETA or Asian copy it probably needs to be serviced. While in for servicing have them regulate the timing.

On a 21J it makes more sense to replace rather than service. The best place to start is by demagnetizing (sounds like a magnetized hairspring). That's the lowest costing, least intrusive approach. After demagnetizing the watch can be put on the analyzer to get an idea of how it's running.

How much do you charge for a movt swap and regulation for a 21J? I want to know if it is worth doing. I have a 21j watch I love and I'm thinking of getting it with an Asian copy so I can have it long term. I have had 21j movts last years so I'm on the fence.

"I reset the time a couple times and sometimes the seconds hand would continue but the minutes hand wouldn't"

Probably your minute hand is loose...so it seems watch is lossing time...but this is not the real problem.

Just press down the minute hand and problem will be solved.

Francisco

Thanks Francisco. I'm a noob when It comes to fiddling with the inards of a watch. I guess i have to remove the movt to get to the hands and just press it down slightly on the pinion?
