Can anybody point to where I can find the best moonwatch rep out there from one of our trusted dealers? I have an average one, and I see a ton out there, but I haven't found any that I consider to be the best in terms of accuracy. I defer to you, the experts... :)

Thanks for any and all info!

Hi, theres no real 100% accurate moonwatch rep but there are a couple of aesthetically decent reps which should keep you satisfied.

This is the current 'best' around....Refer to this thread here:

http://www.repgeek.com/showthread.php?t=16363

Its moonwatch with seagull/Lemania clone movement, very nice, manual wind but incorrect subdial spacing. Most of the trusted dealers will get you this.

Or this:

http://www.rwgforum.com/topic/104041...edmaster-moon/

http://www.watcheden.com/omega-speed...0%7D1-p-1.html

almost accurate subdial spacing but is quartz and tbh pretty decent quality, reliable and visually pleasing.

Pretty much up to yourself after that, there's talk that an 'ultimate' might be on the way soon but I wouldn't hold my breath on that!

---- Sorry this is the review on the ruby watch:

...I had to trawl through my long lost bookmarks in order to search for my massive file of stuff I have on my eternal quest for the elusive perfect moonwatch rep!

....also it simply might be worth popping down a few quid on a used gen if you want perfection, you might get a mintish model about £800-£1Kish. Its getting harder to get them decently priced though as the moony has grown in popularity and omega forces the RRP prices up on new items.

Yep I agree, the domed glass is (makes!) the watch, so I think the quartz is the best rep available at the moment, looks better than the dearer seagull!!

Becareful with watcheden though, theres a thread here somewhere saying they have only silly numbered subdials in stock at the moment but hopefully thats rectified soon. If you can get one looking like melswatch you're good to go ;)

Noob Moonwatch question: The quartz version will tick while the Lemania clone will sweep smoothly?

Yep quartz will tick on that 9 o clock subdial wheras the lemania will sweep. Lemania has a flat(ish) crystal though so theres always a trade off. Both nice watches, can't go wrong with either but none are perfect.

I'm currently mulling this one over as well. The "best" Speedmaster rep going is probably the Lemania/Seagull ST19 version with a few mods. These include: swap flat glass to domed plexi, freeze subdial at 6, and paint the rehault black. The gen caseback for the moon is also a very nice touch to add. The subdials will still be too far apart, but everything else would be pretty good. Sounds like a hassle though, doesn't it?

That sounds like a good deal. I will some day want to buy a used gen Speedy since I love them so much. I'll send you a PM for my modded Lemania when I'm ready!

Excellent idea Five of clubs have a look at this:

Looks pretty good...needs sorting out of the adhesive sealing around the crystal though!

Would a gen dial fit in the Lemania version?

No, different subdial spacing, case size etc, nothing would work unfortunately!

Thanks so much for all the great info! I wonder if there's enough of a demand, we can get one of the manufacturers to do a 'perfect' moon rep; based, of course, on all the great observations and input previously stated... Sounds like it's quite a few folk's 'grail' watch... myself included!

No, you're absolutely right, people have been crying out for a really good moonwatch superrep for years and it still hasn't materialised unfortunately. It would also be an amazing seller if it could be done right!
It basically comes down to that subdial spacing issue...because the omega is an inhouse lemania movement modied by them, the current rep movements just do not fit properly with a visually accurate dial.
Theres plenty of talk recently that the factories have a modifed A7750 auto movement that now can 'do the job' (this movement can be seen in the PO chrono autos) so we may have a visually accurate auto 'moony' sometime in the next year or 2, hopefully! But then it won't be handwind or displayback ;) but we can't have everything :D

Would a gen dial fit in the Lemania version?

No. The reason the spacing is off in these reps is due to the movement layout. So unless you modify the movement, the gen dial won't fit.

Screw that, buy whatever you like. If you're buying reps to pass them off as a gen, then you will never be happy with this hobby. My favorite watch that I currently own is a PAM mini-Fiddy with a UBoat dial and hands (vintage-ized on top of that!). Talk about inaccurate. That's dream-world fantasy stuff right there! Who cares?

Actually, the current ST-19 Moonie reps are a decent replica of the 3573.50 model of Speedmaster. It comes with a sapphire crystal and display back. It is not considered a traditional "Moonwatch" as it does not have the closed back and Hesalite crystal like the 3570.50. Other than the subdial issues, it's not a bad copy. Anyone who knows Omega movements will obviously be tipped off by the blued screws and lack of finishing on the ST-19, but on the wrist it is pretty good.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]

Call me crazy, but heck if they repped this close to 100% visually I'd even buy it with a faux chrono! :maty:

Well I'm sure the finishing isn't anywhere near the gen but I think it still looks pretty good!
