"The u.s. under the control of the treasury department controls the root dns servers. these servers control how every server in the world would be able to see the server your running. Example: thepiratebay.org redirects to an IP address say 192.168.1.1(example). If this law is passed and they decided to shut it down, one they would redirect thepiratebay.org to riaa.org(as an example). they would do that at the root level, and it would pass down to every server in the world. Second, they would order the company providing service to the website to return the IP to themselves, or face having there scope pulled. that would mean that the ISP would be forced to turn off the IP that they provide to the website. Once thats done, the site ceases to be. If you cant get to it via name, and you cant get to it except maybe through a dynamic IP on a cable modem, chances are it will go away. Additionally there are only a limited number of providers for a given area, and once you burn through them, you will be forced to go offline. doesnt matter whether you want to or not."

Just sent this to a friend who is the manager of an IT department at Total Oil. He said:

"The root dns servers this guy is refering to are probably the 13 servers runs by the ICANN. The ICANN is currently on US soil, but it's an international organization, like the UN. It means the US governement has no right over the ICANN, and if they ever do anything, the root dns servers will just be moved elsewhere. But there is nothing to worry about, really. What can be done on the Iranian network would be almost impossible to do on the US network."

Al Gore can take this down, believe it!

Yeah, I heard he runs the Internet from a server at his house. All he has to do is flip the switch! Who's going to argue with him? He created it after all. ;)

Have no fear...just because a law is introduced doesn't mean it will be passed, and even if it were to pass, who knows how long it'll take to enforce. Rep sites are here to stay. :)

It seems domain names can be seized (and therefore sites censored) even without this bill.
Just in case, you might want to write down RWI's IP address: 74.208.65.164
