Hello -

Thank god for this website - i have bought through Pure Time and Timeshop because of this forum.

But this occasion im looking for a genuine watch - my son is 2 months old today and im thinking i would like to pass something genuine on to him - was thinking of getting a DSN power reserve or a concepta IWC but i want this one time something to be genuine.

Basically im going blind after looking at amazon for the past 2 weeks and i need help and pointers.

I lay out what im looking for and see if you good people can help me.

Classic looking gents watch / could be divers though

with

Day/Date
Perpetual Calender
Power Reserve
. ... not a lot to ask is it?

o ya sun/moom phase would be nice to

Perfer a leather strap but not a dealbreaker
Dont care about chronograph
NOT ROSEGOLD - just dont like it

around 44mm max and would really like it under 13mm in depth(height)
Mechanial would be great, automatic, solar(eco-drive), kinetic but if it has to be quartz, fine.

Budget - now this is interesting - I have 2 budgets
1st is under €400 i can afford to spend this on myself for xmas

or €1000 - i got engaged 6 months ago and my good lady will chip in to get me an engagement present.

ABOUT €1000.

This is the one time in my life for a decent timepiece - never again will i be allowed to spend this can of money so this is a once off.

thanks for reading

this is the closest i can find

Think a bit outside the box, my friend, and you can get a true heirloom quality watch worthy of handing down through the generations:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Bulova-Accutron...478529017?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item20b52c3df9
http://cgi.ebay.com/ZENO-WATCH-BASE...586477113?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item415441de39

Oris: http://cgi.ebay.com/MENS-ORIS-BIG-C...587575208?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item4154529fa8
Or how about something vintage and pretty rare? I have 2 of these, and they are stunning and amazingly complicated yet elegant. Breitling movements, Rolex size, rare and increasingly valuable. Plus prices are very low right now due to the economy (couldn't touch a working one for under $2k a couple of years ago).

For what it's worth here's my opinion:

If you want a watch to pass down to your son when he's older you really should avoid 'no brand' or unkown watches like one or two of the ones you selected on Amazon. Whilst Citizen, Timex etc.. are known brands they don't have a great reputation among enthusiasts and I wouldn't consider them 'heirloom' watches. I agree a Concepta IWC is a fantastic watch but if you want a 'true' genuine watch even the Concepta won't cut it.

My Opinion - Hamilton or Oris. Both brands have a long heritage, are respected makes by watch enthusiasts and will always be a quality watch with longevity. I love Hamilton as a brand and I have a gold Hamilton that was my Grandad's from the 40's that's still ticking and keeping good time. This model is right at the top of your budget (although you can get a nice auto Hamilton from $300 upwards) but how about something like this:Hamilton Jazzmaster Classic look, similar in style to the IWC or how about this: Oris Miles. The Bulova Accutron mentioned above is also an excellent choice.

I'd highly recommend paying that bit extra and getting a brand name with heritage and reputation.

I have had the same thought myself and plumped for DOXA.
They are excellent watches, with an amazing heritage.

IMO you want something that will stay classic over the generations. No pvd, ect.

Any SS case. Rolex, breitling, pam ect.

Gen suggestion

I would look at the Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece line of watches
There is one that's mint on Watchuseek with moonphase and some of the other complications you discussed. It's the high end watch line of a not so well known swiss company. I have 2 and I think they are beautiful and huge value for the money. The other company I would explore is longines.

Unfortunately your high end price range limits the well known firms like Rolex (which I am not a fan of) and Breitling (which I am ) and others.

Also look at D Freemont's web site. He's an American who has his watches made in Switzerland and prices are great and sometimes unusual complications. The high end watches are in your price range.

Best of luck and congratulations on understanding your future

I'll go for a Oris Divers Date. It's 44mm, and used ones in excellent condition usually go for 500 - 1000€.
This is an axcellent quality swiss watch, and IMO the best you can buy for that kind of money.

You can also go for a Stowa, like this Antea. Stowa makes excellent German made watches with swiss movements (some are COSC certified). You can find them brand new for 500-1000€.

I would save up my money and buy a Gen IWC 3717 or Omega PO.

Imagine passing down a watch that they take to an AD for service are told it's a fake. No matter how good the concepta IWC or other high end reps are they are still considered "fakes" by AD's standard, as they should.

Anything worth passing down should be a true piece of art, otherwise why bother. Save the money and get enough to get a really great piece. Your son is only 2 months, so you have plenty of time.

Citizen and the others are great watches, but I wouldn't consider them worthy of passing down, unless it's one of several that I am passing down.

Congrats on your son and your engagement.

I bought this $6K White gold/stainless steel DateJust a couple of years ago.

My father had just past away, and even if he wasn´t into watches, he was a perfectionist and enjoyed a nice high quality craftsmanship.
I think this watch is a nice memory of my father, since it kind of stands for his personality. -Clean, discrete, and no tacky "bling".

When I bought the watch, for money I inherited from my father, I had already decided that I would pass it over to my son, (now 11 years old), when he graduates from high school/college/university/whatever, on the condition that he promise not to sell it and to pass it on to his son or daughter in his turn, and so on.

Maybe I´m being optimistic and naive, but that´s my "dream".

Here it is, our family heirloom:

I think that you are doing a very nice thing for your son.
And I´m sure that whatever you choose, he will cherish that watch as a memory of his loving father.

I think Ill have to agree with a previous poster that mentioned Hamilton. The jazzmaster line can be dressy without being over-the-top, and is definitely the kind of watch that could be handed down.

Black or silver dialed Jazzmaster auto-chrono or Maestro is where I would go.

I think other posters, like me, have made the suggestions on the quotes above. To me a watch to hand on to the next generation should be a quality watch from a respected brand with heritage that will still be ticking and keeping good time in 30 years time.

You won't find a heritage or 'heirloom' quality watch featuring the complications you want for your budget so really have two choices.

1) buy a generic brand (usually chinese) watch with the features like perpetual calender etc.. that you want and have linked to. This will give you the functions you want but it won't be a watch of the same quality and longevity as a quality swiss watch and I would doubt it'll still be working when it comes to passing it down to your son.

2) buy a more basic watch with less complications but from a highly regarded quality swiss brand such as Longines, Hamilton, Oris etc.. this will still be ticking in 30 years time and will be something to hand down to your son.

It's a tough choice but you need to be sure what is most important, features and complications or having something of the highest quality to hand down. I personally would rather have a basic watch from a premium brand than a complicated watch from a generic manufacturer but ultimately the choice is yours. If you are happy with a generic or chinese watch then I'm sure any of those you link to will be fine and it's just a case of choosing what you think looks best.

If this is your one chance to buy a nice watch I would urge you to really consider putting your money into getting the highest quality build rather than trying to match your budget to a pre defined feature set.

$2000+ for a Citizen ??!!
(or a sub brand that Citizen is trying to establish and may not even be around in a few years)

For that sort of money there are any number of established gen makers watches you could be looking at.
Why not look into some classic vintage gens that are worth the money rather than overpriced modern tat?

I know its a citizen but its beautiful and loaded with features.
I think it comes with a 5 yr warranty - but i gotta say ye are talking very passionately about Gens - its the very thing i stated against in my opening post, that features - gizdmos, facts, boys toys - whatever - are important.
