An Answer to the Old Wrist Size Question...maybe...pics

We have all seen this question raised a million times by now, and recently read something about the perspective you get when looking at a watch on your wrist versus seeing it from a distance in relation to the whole arm, and wrist. Two totally different looks, and below are some quick shots to show it. As a background...I'm 6' tall and weight roughly 215, I would say my arms and wrists are larger than most (wrist are about 8").

When taking a wrist shot or looking at the time up close, the watch is in the foreground and looks larger than what's in the background(wrist). Stand back and look or take a pic from a slight distance and you quickly see the true perspective. In the first pic below, up close this 42mm case seems like it takes up my whole 8" wrist. In the next shot you see what it really looks like on me, as well as what someone else sees when they view the whole arm, wrist, watch, hand, ect. I have 2 full links showing on both the top and bottom of the case. Suddenly that 42mm looks tiny! I still agree with most that any 6.5" wrist can't pull of a 45mm po(no matter how much you like the watch).

Maybe the moral is...if you look down at your wrist and think "this watch is too big"...stand back and look in the mirror before selling it.

I've seen

My main point is that there are 2 different ways to look at a watch and make a determination on the best size for oneself. A watch looks much better from a distance in true perspective(as in your case), and they always look huge when you look down at them.

I've seen some of your wrist shots, your wrist looks bigger than a 6.5". You can pull it off just fine, but your wrist looks closer to 7" and it looks like you have bigger hands. I have seen many who have what they claim is a 6.5", and a 45 po looks like a clock on their wrist...I know we have all seen this.

Yes, they're 6.75". :D

Your point about focal distances (foreshortening) is a good one, however.

I will get flamed with my opinion, but I´ve seen several respected members with beautiful watches an I think wrist is too, or sometimes, way too small...

sorry guys... althought, Although, most impotant thing is how confortable or how you are happy with the watch, there is a aesthetic issue going on there...

Sorry guys onve again, but sometimes big watches look rare in small wrists, I´ve tried 47mm PAM in my 19-20cm wrist and sincerely does not look coorect to me.....

But, to contradict myself: where the watch that is most confortable with you....

Good point about looking at yourself in the mirror from a distance to get a true perspective.

If you have a slim wrist, 6.5" or so, it helps if your wrist is wide and flat, sometimes you can pull off a bigger watch.

Also, I think one rule holds true no matter how much you love the watch, if the lugs extend beyond your wrist, it's too big for you.

I think the answer to this question is influenced by a couple of things. For me, it is about total body about proportions. Everyone has different proportions. A small wrist may or may not pull off a big watch depending on the person. But it is also about style and fashion - big watches are in right now, so this obviously has a big influence on the aesthetic question of "too big or not". In Pugwash's pic it is all about the watch - front and center and looking very cool. In Michaelbro1's mirror pic the watch still stands out and looks cool, but it isn't necessarily the main focus unless you are interested in watches (like we all obviously are). Right now a fashion trend is for large watches, next year, 2 or 3 years from now, that could change and we would probably answer the size question completely differently.

I agree with the lugs hanging off the wrist looks stupid, I have a 50mm u-boat homage and it looks great on my 7" wrist at certain angles when look in the mirror with my arm turned facing the mirror it looks awesome and def not too big as the wrist is wider but when just looking down looks too big. the perfect size for me comfort and look wise is 46 perfect example is sohc on rubber.
