What I think of RWI

Hi,

I thought I would add a thread, to say what a fantastic forum this is, I would probably have posted a lot more previously, but it seems that everything I need to know is just a search away. The only problem is the amount of time it eats up...

I stumbled on this site by chance about a month ago, and it has turned me from a relatively normal guy thinking about getting a new watch, into some kind of nutter who wakes up in the night thinking about crown guards, datewheel fonts etc - a month ago I would hardly have remembered if the watch I had been wearing even had a date, let alone its colour or font...

Anyway, I did a quick introduction post, but here is a bit more detail.

First of all, I made the classic 'noobie' mistake of buying a watch, THEN doing the research, so of course when the watch came (a red submariner) I was already disappointed - with the crystal, bezel, dial fonts, datewheel, case back, strap, even the solid bars instead of springbars (!) - I have given it away as a gift to a friend, and am researching my next purchases a bit more carefully.

Anyway, my current shortlist is as follows:

1) Omega Seamaster Professional, 'sword hands' - like the one in this picture. I am looking for a 'daily beater' so nothing too flash, and probably with a 21J movement:

Trouble is, I can't find a good one. Despite all the trusted dealers usually having the same watches, this does seem to be a bit of an exception, they all seem a bit different (and quite a bit wrong) - maybe they are copies of slightly different models, but the differences include: case size too small, hands too short, no He valve, different bezel, white border around date (seems to be right on the 'triangle on stilts hands' versions), no '300m' marking, poor wave pattern on dial, etc, etc...
If anyone knows where I could get a decent version, please let me know!!

2) For an accurate (and cool looking) rep, Omega Speedmaster Date, black face / black subdials, with 7750 movement - I know the 'retro' version is supposed to be the best copy of the gen, but I can't help thinking it looks revolting (sorry fans...)

3) Hand-wind Moonwatch with display back - would be my number one choice, is a fantastic watch and with all the history etc, but the dial spacing and 'running hours' at 6 would really bug me...

Yes, I know they are all Omegas, but I have only been a member for a month, the research is ongoing....!

The first week I found this site my wife was so angry with me. I was so glued to the laptop. She got so tired of me asking her to look at this watch and that watch, and saying that 's the watch I want. The only way I convinced her to let me buy a rep watch was to buy her one also. So now I know that everytime I want to convince her to let me buy another one is to find one for her also.

@omegagmt - Tell me about it! I think if I mention watches to her one more time she will throw something at me. I tried the approach of offering to buy her a watch, but her response was "not a fake though, a real one"... Could turn out to be an extremely expensive hobby, unless I convince her that Accurist or Casio is a luxury brand.......

Hi I am a noob also and I think that RWI should post a disclaimer warning new members just how addictive this hobby can be.
It really brings out the OCD.
I have to go now. It is time to do my hourly bedtime check on all of my reps. I cant sleep until I have each watch's second hand exactly syncronized with the others. Isn't it a beautiful sight to see the second hand cross the 12 postition on all of your watchesw at the same exact time?:biglaugh:

One other thing I want to say.

It really bothers me when I ask a person wearing a very expensive gen what time it is and they round off the minutes to the nearest five minute interval. Instead of saying it is 10:57AM they would simply say 10:55AM. This has happened to me just the other day. I got even though. The incident occured on a job interview. I asked the person the time and he responded by giving me the time rounded off....I got even with him, I didn't hire him.

@Romulous - liked your story about the job interview, but as we are into reps, shouldn't we accept a little inaccuracy here and there? ;-)

Well, I took the plunge and placed an order today.

Given my all-Omega shortlist, guess what I bought???

Yeah, I got the online watch forum bug too. Luckily my girlfriend got the online dress shopping bug around the same time, so we're both geeks who shop/research endlessly before buying.

I really enjoy when someone posts pictures and reviews of the watches I'm looking at buying. That to me is the most valuable tool on this forum.

Also, the community here is very positive and respectful. That's a rare and pleasant gift.
