Hi,
I thought I would add a thread, to say what a fantastic forum this is, I would probably have posted a lot more previously, but it seems that everything I need to know is just a search away. The only problem is the amount of time it eats up...
I stumbled on this site by chance about a month ago, and it has turned me from a relatively normal guy thinking about getting a new watch, into some kind of nutter who wakes up in the night thinking about crown guards, datewheel fonts etc - a month ago I would hardly have remembered if the watch I had been wearing even had a date, let alone its colour or font...
Anyway, I did a quick introduction post, but here is a bit more detail.
First of all, I made the classic 'noobie' mistake of buying a watch, THEN doing the research, so of course when the watch came (a red submariner) I was already disappointed - with the crystal, bezel, dial fonts, datewheel, case back, strap, even the solid bars instead of springbars (!) - I have given it away as a gift to a friend, and am researching my next purchases a bit more carefully.
Anyway, my current shortlist is as follows:
1) Omega Seamaster Professional, 'sword hands' - like the one in this picture. I am looking for a 'daily beater' so nothing too flash, and probably with a 21J movement:
Trouble is, I can't find a good one. Despite all the trusted dealers usually having the same watches, this does seem to be a bit of an exception, they all seem a bit different (and quite a bit wrong) - maybe they are copies of slightly different models, but the differences include: case size too small, hands too short, no He valve, different bezel, white border around date (seems to be right on the 'triangle on stilts hands' versions), no '300m' marking, poor wave pattern on dial, etc, etc...
If anyone knows where I could get a decent version, please let me know!!
2) For an accurate (and cool looking) rep, Omega Speedmaster Date, black face / black subdials, with 7750 movement - I know the 'retro' version is supposed to be the best copy of the gen, but I can't help thinking it looks revolting (sorry fans...)
3) Hand-wind Moonwatch with display back - would be my number one choice, is a fantastic watch and with all the history etc, but the dial spacing and 'running hours' at 6 would really bug me...
Yes, I know they are all Omegas, but I have only been a member for a month, the research is ongoing....!
