Talking. Saying No. Timeouts. Spanking.
There has long been a debate as to how to best raise children, how to reform juvenile delinquents, and how to change criminals.
I wish I knew these answers. I don't.
Spanking, reform schools and prisons are not designed to make them feel bad about themselves.
They are attempts to break deliberate disobedience to the rules or refusal to exercise self-control and self-discipline in following the rules.
Spanking children can be considered "child abuse" and if the majority of society so agrees parents who spank their children my have those children taken by the State.
We are not far from that happening in some states while "spare the rod, spoil the child' is the standard in other (less enlightened some would say?) states.
Likewise, certain past actions by reform schools and prisons to punish those who fail to follow the rules can be considered to be "cruel and unusual punishment" today and therefore are no longer allowed.
It is hard to know for sure which technique works best in helping a child learn to exercise self control so they do what they are supposed to do and do not do what they are not supposed to do.
If whatever you do works for your child, that is just great!
Maybe each child will respond to a different approach since each child is different.
I always tell my kids: "I did the best I knew how to do for you; your job is to figure out how to do better for your own kids."
So many different ways (hard labor on rock pile, chain gangs, solitary confinement, cell blocks, college-like dormitories, etc) have been tried to change prisoners and the recidivism rate has remained about 70% for as long as I think statistics have been kept no matter what type of prison system was used.
Perhaps what makes a person a criminal is genetic and nothing can be done to change 70% of them until medicine discovers treatments for genetic defects.
Likewise, perhaps whatever makes a person behave "good" or "bad" is genetic and little can be done to raise a good child if they have a genetic predisposition to be bad.
Those who have the responsibility for the child or prisoner get to try what method they think will or may work and those of us who do not have that responsibility should be cautious in claiming we know better.
At RWI the Admin is the "law in this town" responsible for keeping order and a civil society here.
They get to select the methods they want to use here and we should be cautious in second guessing them.
Certainly, they will make some mistakes and so would we if we were in charge.
