So... pretend you have come into 5k US the easy way, and your wrist is feeling a bit nekked. Maybe you could stretch another 2k or so for the right deal(s).

Calling all experts, or anyone with an opinion... what watch(es) would you buy, and why?

Realize, like most people, I can't just pi** away 5-7k... so whatever is suggested must be capable of being resold for something close to the original price paid.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions! It will help!

I would go with a Glashutte Original Panomatic Lunar.

If you're going to buy a gen watch make sure it's good looking and goes with everything. :)

If you want something that retains or increases in value, that you could sell quickly should a rainy day come, and is a great watch to wear, then I'd go for a used Rolex. My choice would be a GMT.

Gently used Panerai 000 = ~$3500, maybe a bit less.

Dornblueth & Sohn Calibre 99.0 = ~$3650

That's about $7K which falls into your "stretch it by $2K" parameters. And you've got a couple of great watches that can both be either dressed up or down.

you say you want something that will hold value, so reps are generally out of the question

AP ROO Singapore GP
AP ROO Las Vegas Strip
AP ROO Montoyo
AP ROO 2009 Silver Themes
AP ROO Bumblbee
AP ROO Alinghi

now BREITLING!

Breitling Navitimer World SS Bracelet White Face
Breitling Montbrillont Datora SS Bracelet White Face
Breitling Super Avenger Black Face SS Bracelet
Breitling Skyland Avenger Black Face SS Bracelet

For such money, no point getting a few reps or reps + gen combo.

A Rolex would be a very wise choice. Get them preowned but full with box papers and service history. Any sports model will do. Skip the President, DD or Datejust.

Yes, you are getting a lot for your money by buying the D. Dornblüth und Sohn but resale value drops quite a lot.

Start looking on preowned pieces and you are getting a lot for your money. Even a preowned Breguet Type XXL Chrono will fit to your budget.

Skip Panerai... They are quite volatile and you never know what will happen.

Conclusion: stick to Rolex if you have thought of reselling it, even a slight one.

That stretch 2k bits, you can get another preowned Omega or Breitling easily. Mind you, mechanical one.

Ok if you want to blow it all, look for inhouse powered watches. A Portuguese Automatic 7 days comes to my mind.

Rule of thumb: get them preowned.

I'm in the same situation.
But I plan on keeping the gens so no worries about re-sale value.
This the the gens I have on order:

- New Breitling Steelfish on gold (light brown) calf leather, white dial.
This will be on my wrist while I'm in casual mode. Jeans, T-shirts, sneekers...

- Used Submariner 16610 N series.
This will go with everything. Suit, shirt, chinos. I think I even will look good dressed just in the Sub and nothing else!

The change will be used on more reps and straps :)

Most of the reps will be dress watches that I try to match with my suits at the office and change every day.

IMHO, they are pretty good choices. I admit that I am not a big fan of the Steelfish but Avenger Seawolf Ti.

That's beautiful, I love the plain white faced watches with black leather straps. Understated and elegant :).

Does anyone know which Rolex's appreciate. I know that many of the sports-style Rollie's hang onto their value well (DSSD, GMT II, SUb, etc), but haven't heard of any that can appreciate over time.
