Rolex 6538

Gentlemen,

I have long had a love of vintage Rolex. The cornerstone of my collection is a Noob V7 no date sub that I intend on upgrading with a better Crystal and Bezel insert.

I would love a vintage look Big Crown to compliment the V7. So this has caught my eye.
I would be grateful for any comments as you all have considerably more expertise than I do.
I know the bracelet if incorrect but I'm also a huge fan of folded steel bracelets so for me that is a bonus.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or comments...

Build up a silix. You'll love it even more if you build yourself.

Up until December 2016 I'd never even taken the back of of a watch, after reading alot of vintage build threads on here I decided to give it a go and built these.

I had no skills at this at all a few months back so if I can do it you can .

Also the total build cost of all 3 of these watches was about £500 .
Case from Silix is only $45 ,new dg2813 movement is £30 from cousins, Tiger concept hands $20 and dials 2 from raffles and one from m2m sales on here,
Also helarenou has some pretty decent dials for $95 if you email them and ask.

Definitely get the gen DG movement. The A21J 2813 is crap.

If it's your first go, get the whole watch from silix ROL234, a T21 xs306.449, and a gen DG2813.

Swap the movement and glue in the T21. Easy peasy nice watch. You're so proud

Not a major investment in tools: sticky ball, screwdrivers, tweezer, loupe, hand pullers, crystal glue.

Once you got that down, you can move on to more mods and more tools

Alhig72 and Charlie,

Many thanks for your help with this. I am going to go ahead with this project so I shall keep you updated with pictures and progress.
But how do I know which movement and crystals fit which case..? And do the movements require some kind of frame to hold them in place..?
I actually have a couple of cheap replica Date Subs so in theory I could use these cases. But the question remains, how do I even hold the movement in place without it rattling around in the case (assuming I even buy one that fits)...

Your story was similar to mine. I had a blue noob v5 which I wore very often until I got hooked on a 6538 silix base build. Gradually moved through two 6538 highly modded before went all out on my current build. These things are truly the Crown Jewels of any sport watch collection.

Why not start by taking apart one of the cheap subs you have, measure the dial, get one that fits from somewhere like raffles dials, and when you've done that and feel comfortable with taking apart and putting together move on to a 6538. If you order a case from Silix they will supply movement tabs and screws if you ask them. Or get a whole watch and change the dial and plexi

Also if you get a cheap complete 6538 from Silix which is about $95 you can have this dial for free if you want it

Just get one of these from Silix

You should get a Sternkreuz HW 304 plexi.

I used a 306 on mine, on one case it fitted straight in (tight) on the other I had to sand the edge of the plexi a tiny bit but I think if I knew I'd have to do that I've gone with a 304

Yeah
As it is cheap, take two HW306 and two HW304. Then you will see what fit the best.

Silix lists the complete watch as 38mm case and the bare case as 39.5mm. Is that accurate?
