Rolex improved the 4130

So, I was talking with misiekped about servicing the noob 4130 and told him that the chrono hand stutters when engaged. The problem was the rep clutch wheel and he advised me to buy a Gen chrono seconds gear too. Especially a more recent revisioned version by Rolex.

This chrono part together with the running seconds gear has received an improvement but Rolex never told people about it.

So I recieved the chrono seconds gear and was surprised by the teeth.. It's nothing like we have ever seen before on any watch..

If you look closely you will see that the teeth are surrounded by mini springs.

So at first I was surprised and did not know what to think of it and I did a little investigation. I found a website that was linked to the Rolex forums where a watchmaker showed a teardown and service of the 4130. He mentioned that the running seconds gear was improved by Rolex and that all new 4130 movements and those that serviced by Rolex, get this new version of gears with spring loaded teeth.

The whole reason why Rolex did this improvement is to improve the amplitude of watch when the chrono is engaged. It should reduce the amplitude drop when using the chrono.

Unfortunately, I did not test the before phase of the normal gears to see how much it would make a difference. But I did so after my watch was serviced and I replaced those parts.

Here are the results :

Chrono disengaged amplitude: 284
Chrono engaged amplitude : 267

Not bad, I must say.

If anyone has a timegrapher and a serviced noob daytona, please post your results here so that we can compare the differences.

Fascinating info, insight and pics Logixa, thanks!

I'd certainly consider having this upgrade done when either of my two Noob Daytonas need their next service - but fingers crossed that's not going to be necessary for a few years!

Thank you. Do you happen to know the parts numbers of those 2 parts? I believe one is 4130-815?

It's 4130-360-Y1 for the running seconds gear and 4130-820-1-G1 for the chrono. Due pay close attention for the G1 and Y1 versions, these are newer ones with the spring loaded teeth

Thank you. Nothing on eBay or Chrono24. May I ask where you got the parts from?

1 more thing, if you change the chrono gear, the chrono hand will not fit easily anymore. It has to be broached a little bit to make it fit again.

The running seconds.

Contact the seller of the running seconds and request them the G1 version

Ha thank you man. Already found exactly those 2 offerings and already texted the seller :D.

Short question though: you only need those 2 parts to make it work right, nothing else on top of that?

Yeah those 2 should cover it. I personally did also change the clutch wheel. The teeth of the rep parts are not as good as the Gen.

Yea I have a gen clutch in my daytona (4130-815) and I’m wondering if I also need a Y or G version for that since I don’t think they mesh with the new 820

You don't need a mesh version, I think that there isn't even a clutch version with meshed teeth. The clutch is in different versions and you can tell by the clamp on top of the clutch. Not sure what was changed in between the versions.

Your current Gen clutch is good

red1 check out this wheel. Looks familiar, doesnt it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/401980546782?ul_noapp=true

finally getting to the bottom of this. :D

Logixa I had my Daytona serviced by Red and sent him a gen 4130-820 since I had gen hands and the big chrono seconds fit better with a gen 4130-820. However, I had a new 4130-820 (G1) and it did not mesh with the rep clutch.

I then brought the watch to Domi and he said he never saw the 4130-820-G1 and was convinced thats not the right wheel for that caliber so I sent it back and got an old 4130-820 wheel. I also bought a gen clutch (4130-815) but the new G1 version did not mesh with it either. Really dont know what 815 part to get to make it mesh. It seems there are also differences. It at least does not mesh with my "old" 815.

I also have the normal clutch in it and it works fine

thats very weird. My gen 820 (G1) did not fit the rep wheel or the gen wheel. Red tried fitting it to the rep clutch which did not work and Domi tried fitting it to the gen clutch which did not work either. You are also referring to 4130-815, right?

Fitting only worked with gen clutch (815) and old wheel (820 without G1)

Oh sorry maybe I said it wrong. I currently have in it : 820-1-G1 meshed, 815-Y1 clutch wheel normal, seconds gear 360-1-Y1 meshed and intermediate wheel 335-G1

Ah yea. I believe i Have the 815 without -Y1. Now we're getting to the bottom of this. So you basically need 3 parts. Not sure if the intermediate wheel is also needed? Does it mesh with any of the 3 above parts?

I'm not sure but I thought that the intermediate is indirectly connected to the seconds and thus also clutch. Was it really needed? I don't know to be honest. It did improve the feeling when setting the time, it's as stiff as the Gen now
