Just been looking through the "stickied" tutorials to try and find one on Silencing a MIYOTA 9015. I got to page 10 and hadn't found one. Anyone have a useful video/tutorial? There must be one somewhere on RWI.

Oh, I tried using the RWI search bar (Does that ever work for anyone? I don't think I have ever had a successful search using it?! Or is it just me?)

Thanks

I send my reps to Domi, so many conflicting suggestions that I decided not to risk myself

GingerBubba any chance I could send you mine? Thanks mate.

Absolutely!!!

You won't be getting it back mind you, but send away.

I think the technique Glaude is referring to is that I whip out the noisy rotors and wear them as hand wind watches! Which is great if you rotate your watches regularly like me and don't need the auto function.

Having said that, my rotors are now all firmly back in my watches and they are spinning whisper quiet thanks to my new sneaky tip; Molykote DX Paste.

Now, a forum modder on here mentioned that when Molykote gets hot, it drips into the watch, but equally, a watchsmith I trust told me it's fine, hence me going for it. Plus I don't live in a desert. And so far, so amazing; whisper quiet! The risk's on you though.

I used moebius 8200 - slaughterer tested quite a few oils/greases and thought this was the best. I'm a novice but it has made the rotor on my overseas noticeably quieter (if not silent).

The hardest part of that whole process is removing and reassembling that deco rotor. 2 tiny screws and then 3 more tiny screws.

As for “silencing” it, it’s hit or miss from my experience and from what I’ve read. All unidirectional rotors spin and that is the noise that’s annoying as hell.

I’ve never been able to completely silence it but möbius 9010 seemed to work best for me. I’ve tried pretty much every oil I have.

As for how much you need to put on there... just enough so that there isn’t any excess that can drop down to the gears. So basically, put a few tiny drops using the red (I think) Oiler around the gear and hope for the best.

Good luck man. I’ve had 3 or 4 miyota movements with deco plates (omega and AP) and I’ve never been able to get one completely silent. You will always hear the rotor spinning backwards. You don’t hear the gear winding tho.

I can’t stand that spinning sound but as long as you don’t jerk your arm around, it won’t spin fast enough to be loud enough for everyone to hear.

Have you ever seen Richard Mille set to the fastest auto wind? It’s louder than any rotor spinning I’ve ever heard in my life but at least that one is chosen and not manual. lol.

Wanted to check what grease I could use before ordering any product for this operation.

I see that GingerBubba propose using Molykote DX which seem to be Lithium Grease. I've read through the linked RWG thread where silicon grease seem to be favoured. Also seeing Parto and bc1221 advocating Moebius.

After reading some regarding the matter I do understand that the operation might not be exactly conventional, but seeing these different recommendations I'd just like to know if there's any product that is superior? Also if the silicon grease I originally purchased to grease gaskets would be sufficient?

All I can say is I've used moebius and it did fuck all - it made it spin faster and louder if anything. And obviously I've used Molykote which is what I love - but certainly I'm no watchsmith (though it was my watchsmith that put me onto Molykote).

Alright, fair enough. Seems like it is grease that is recommended generally, which does seem logical.

Do you have any idea how silicone grease compares to Molykote/lithium dito?

Sorry, no.

Honestly, you won't regret Molykote. It's only £7 ish.

I hear you.

I currently have a shopping bag in the making over at cousinsuk. At the moment I am entertaining the idea of purchasing some additional items to complete a starting kit of some sorts. At the moment considering to add a magnifying headband visor and a rubber bench mat (and some more... :) ). We'll see where I end up and how big of a hole in my pocketbook this venture will tear.

Thanks for your input, I'll go with the Molykote for sure.

+1 for Molykote.

I managed to silence (dead quiet) the rotor of the VC 2000V and that's the loudest thing I've ever seen or heard.
