Gas Price War

I got this in an email. It makes sense to me, what do you guys think? Is this worth sending to others?

---------------------------------------------------------------

GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It's worth your consideration.

Join the resistance! I hear we are going to hit close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May!

The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers.

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all! (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am . so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK Count me in! I don't buy from ExxonMobil or Shell because over the years both companies bought out independent refineries just to shut them down, thereby removing competition and refining capacity from the market. All for the purpose of inflating the price we pay at the pump and lining their pockets.

NO! It's another stupid chain letter that's been circulating since around 2001.

A boycott of a couple of brands of gasoline won't result in lower overall prices. Prices at the non-boycotted outlets would rise due to the temporarily limited supply and increased demand. If you're not buying it from Exxon/Mobil, you're still buying it somewhere. The unaffected outlets would then make a killing by offering gasoline at its "normal" (i.e., pre-boycott) price or by selling off their output to the non-boycotted companies, who will need the extra supply to meet demand. The only person who really gets hurt in this stupid scheme is the gas station operator, who has almost no control over the price or supply.

Gasoline companies are ALL tied to a sort-of gasoline "bank", there's X-amount produced and Y-amount consumed. If Exxon/Mobil (or whoever) can't sell gas, they'll simply sell their surplus to the "bank", and somebody else will sell it. Remember a few years ago when marked Shell tankers delivered to Shell stations, Citgo tankers delivered to Citgo stations, etc? And now, most gas is delivered by independent trucks? 'Cause gas is delivered to a regional terminal, and, depending on available supply, you are most likely buying "generic" gas. It all goes into, and is pumped out of common tanks. There are exceptions, but that tanker IS leaving the terminal with gas in it, regardless of where it came from or where it's going.

Remember, the oil companies can sell all the gas they produce, and they couldn't give a rat's ass who buys it.......their distributors or another oil company. A friend of mine used to own an Amoco station, and he would actually get a call while the truck was on it's way to his station telling him the price just went up (from the time the truck left the terminal!), and if he didn't pay the higher price, they would send the truck to another station (not necessarily Amoco) and he wouldn't get any gas, and they couldn't "guarantee" if or when he would get another shipment!!!!

Think about it.......if everybody stopped buying gas from Exxon, do you REALLY think they'd freak out and eat their gas? Nope, they'd sell it at the same price to Shell or Citgo, but the poor bastard running the corner Exxon station would go broke 'cause he couldn't sell his hot dogs and Coke, where the real profits are.

Cannot work. Read here for why. Also, are you aware of how much gas prices are outside of the US? In Europe, we pay two-and-a-half times what you pay.

Pugs, you guys pay more than 2X the amount per gallon?

How many miles per gallon/litre do you all get in your cars?

Firstly, our gallons are different. :)

Secondly, we get a LOT more economy out of our cars on average. We don't have a big truck culture. Cars are smaller and lighter.

Thirdly, we drive a lot less. We have better public transport too.

That's what I figured - that vehicles there were MUCH more fuel efficient that in the fuel-hungry USA...so basically the ratios are comparable between our countries as far as price vs consumption rate.

U guys get more miles per gallon (or your equivalent) - your gov't charges more.
We typically get less miles per gallon - we get charged less. - because our tanks are gigantic.

Bottom line is, gas is high, any way ya cut it.
